Default 0870 numbers?

Hi

I run my own business from home & I'm moving house this year. I've been thinking of getting an 0870 number so that I don't have to keep changing phone number every time I move. In addition, there is a small income on 0870 lines & I hope that cold sales spammers domn't ring 0870 numbers.

Checking Google, I found this site & was hoping that someone may have some advice about 0870 numbers in general or the site in particular. My phone line is a BT business line & I also have ADSL enabled on the line. Caller ID is very useful to me.

Hello

You can also get a VoIP number if you want. It's free. I have an 01892 number that rings on my computer. (or phone if it's connected to the VoiP socket on my router).

Thanks, I already have VoIP but I find that it's not 100% reliable. Do you get paid for receiving 0870 calls over VoIP?

Hello

You don't, the provider does.

Hi Nick,

Having my own telecoms company, I know for customers we don't recommend VoIP as it's not 100% reliable, even with the advent of 2006. For reliable and intensive business applications you can't go wrong with 'traditional' non-geo numbers, eg. 0870/0871, 090 etc etc.

Rebates are availabel with us and most providers but be weary of high payouts as the customer service is normally all web-based and the network is not tier-1, eg. BT, Cable & Wireless, Worldcom etc.

Feel free to check out www.air-tel.co.uk and drop me an email to jai@air-tel.co.uk or a PM and I'll see if I can help in any way.

cheers, Jai

Forgot to add - you do get revenue for VoIP inbound calls. It's higher than for landline terminated calls but like you say, it's not 100% reliable.

Just one more thing to consider Nick you shouldnt be paying any fees to a telco for a non geo number, I was working for a telco and we did all that for free. As regards VoIP you can get small telephone systems that fall back to PSTN if there is a problem with VoIP now to cover the reliability issue but the reliability and quality has improved greatly now and is really dependant on your SIP provider.
AFAIK there are no 08 rebates on VoIP, most of the providers use these as a stop gap until they have numbering ranges covering STDs.

Call me on 0870 389 1114 and then check your bill next month for an accurate costing

Higher and more to the point they are not included in any free call offers. So if you have a bundle that includes x number of local or national calls you still have to pay to call 0870.

Best website to get round it is www.saynoto0870.com

I bought a couple of 0845 numbers for my business a couple of years ago.. think they were abotu £20 each for a one-off cost and through a control panel I can change the number they forward to... ideal as in the past year I've moved officed twice!!

I used these guys: http://www.uk2numbers.co.uk

The 0845 number acts as a 'local' number no matter where you are in the country, so much more friendly than the 0870 number
