Newsnight talked of a "radio-silence" to help the effort to locate, rescue or negotiate the release of the hostages. Apart from snippets here and there, the media have respected the security services request for minimal publicity.
People like Nick Burg and Robert Jacob suffered a terrible fate. Equally alarming was how effecive this act of terror (in the real sense) was, in terms of sending a brutal, powerful message to The West. I'd imagine that, strategic benefits aside, limted media coverage would be requested by the establishment to muffle the impact of these acts and make them less appealing to future would-be kidnappers.
God bless the hostages.
