The EU probably banned them as some of them were grown in Paraguay and not just Brazil.

But, you are probably right about some healthscare.

There was a thing about Cancer..

'Apparently some unshelled nuts contained above the regulatory limits of Aflatoxins, which are toxins formed by certain moulds on food, particularly nuts and nut products grown in warm, humid conditions.
They have been shown to cause cancer in a number of animal species by damaging DNA. There is also evidence to suggest they may cause cancer in humans.'

Saying all that, I'm sure I have seen unshelled Brazil nuts in my local Waitrose recently..

They were banned by the Euro-natzis about a year ago, for "health" reasons (dunno the details). Funnily enough, i bought a bag at my local Waitrose just before they were withdrawn, just to spite the faceless beaurocrats.

Time for a pint of creosote to celebrate

From boomer's link, for those of hard of hearing:

To protect consumers, the Commission has issued Decision 2003/493/EC. This introduces measures to ensure unshelled Brazil nuts from Brazil, that contain aflatoxins above regulatory levels, do not enter the EU.

Decision 2003/493/EC, reports the site, has been enacted into English Law by The Food (Brazil Nuts from Brazil) (Emergency Control) (England) Order 2003, which came into force on 11 July.

Contrary to what our free-marketeering friend alleges, it's not all Brazil nuts that are banned - just the ones with the killer fungus on them. And, no matter your political affiliations or beliefs, you've gotta believe the eradication of killer, DNA-mutating nut fungus is a thing to celebrate, not mourn, this festive time.
