Blacking up

Blacking up
What's everyones view on comedians (Little Britain) for example getting 'Blacked Up', i.e. covering themselves in make up to appear as a black person, I cant make my mind up, is it racist or is it simply a comedian impersonating a person ?
Is it a case of not doing so would be discriminatory, i.e. if they just played white characters ?
I have not seen it on TV for years, not since the Two Ronnie's, the Black and White minstrel show is not shown anymore (a good thing as it was crap I beleive) as it showed white people blacked up reinforcing racial stereotypes, why is that any different from Desiree the large black naked lady and the American TV evangelist, or even Ting Tong the Thai bride ?
Does anybody actually care, black or white ?

I think it has more to do with the motives and the meanings behind it IMHO.
As an alternative how about the Wayans Brothers in the film White Chicks where they 'white up' to play two girls - Never thought about it being racist but to see them and how they act as white chicks is just plain funny.
As for the black and white minstral show it could not be re run as it would look and feel so dated and out of place and would just not get any viewing figures. The Two Ronnies are on UK Gold all the time.
