Obscure/Forgotten/Ignored albums
Lets have some nominations of albums that most wont of heard of that you think are good, dont have to be some obscure underground german techno outfit (Astraboy, I am looking at you) but maybe good albums that time has forgot or by artists that didnt get that much exposure.
How about,
The Wonderstuff : HUP
Lloyd Cole and the Commotions : Mainstream
Kosheen : kokokapelli
Death In Vegas : The Contino Sessions
And Something called Brand New Testament by a band called Mo Solid Gold, found it on a compilation 'ahem' mp3 cd.

Pop Will Eat Itself -- "This is the day, this is the hour" .... THE seminal British sampladelic indie metal noise fest.
Sugar -- "Copper Blue" .... one of the all-time great rock albums. Why the VASTLY overrated Pixies get so much attention and Sugar so little is beyond me.
Pretty much anything by Gil Scott-Heron. The man is a genius.
Ghost of an American Airman -- "Life Under Giants" .... anyone who likes Razorlight or the Waterboys would love this.
Misty in Roots -- Live at the Counter-Eurovision 79 .... one of the best live albums ever. One of the best roots reggae albums ever. John Peel's favourite album ever.

Totally agree, ghetto style is welded in my stereo at home. Not just tuneful brilliance but a strong civil rights message to boot (probably why he's little known )
While i'm here :
Finley Quaye - Maverick a Strike
Also maybe not too obscure but seminal for me as a youngster :
Warren G - Regulate (G Funk Era)

Sniff 'n' the Tears - Driver's Seat etc.
That's reminded me to get a CD cos I can't play the LP or the tape! Late 70s?

Current album which I dont think is selling enough off Jack Johnson - In Between Dreams, absolute storming album, really do love it.
Cant think of any old stuff that I really rated as something that didnt catch on with the masses though.

Dreams Less Sweet by Psychic TV - (£2.99 at Makro in about 1985). Famous for being a holophonic recording... I challenge anyone to show me their copy!
... There's a good reason it's obscure, it's ****e!

Another classic that seems to be overlooked now; probably due to 'Different Class'; excellent none the less...
This one is more subjective, it disappeared almost without trace despite good critical reviews.

Great forgotten albums? Tricky but...
Sopwith Camel - The Miraculous Hump Returns From the Moon: Innocent folk/rock/Psych stuff with the best rocking sax solo on Astronaut Food. Not a truly great album really, but I like it.
Clouds - Harland The Wolf: That I know of the only recorded material by blues legend Jim Armstrong since his departure from Them. Someone borrowed my copy in about 1985 and i've not seen it since.
Linkin' Louisiana Peps - Blues Connection: Gritty blues with lots of harp and a great feel, though not really a classic album of all time but I like it.
Keith Jarrett - solo piano stuff: You either love it or hate it I suspect but it can be very clever if someone indulgent at times. Maybe not really forgotten though.
Rachmaninov - 2nd Piano Concerto: Far from obscure but many interested in popular music may not have given this a listen. This is the most incredible work of genius, romantic, emotional and a cracking good tune and you can pick up a decent recording for a few quid. Consider it a concept album several steps ahead of DSOTM in the genius stakes and give it a go.
Eric Clapton - Just One Night: Again not really obscure but a truly wonderful live recording. The better and louder the monitoring the better and more like a real live show this sounds with amps buzzing and hissing etc. The recent performances with Billy Preston might be musically better (very much a matter of taste) but this is a great live recording.
Frank Zappa - The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life: Another great live recording that sounds totally different from the Clapton. You can just hear the technology crackle on this album. Interesting to compare the production values of this album with the succession of dodgy edits on the Van Morrison live One Night in San Francisco album.
Mac-Talla - Mairidh gaol is ceol: Great music from the Western Isles of Scotland with some fantastic mouth music. (Thig crioch air an t-saoghail, ach mairidh gaol 's ceol = an end will come to the world but love and music will endure.)
13th Floor Elevators, Otis Spann, Mahalia Jackson, Billy Preston, Ozric Tentacles, Patricia Kaas, Ben Webster...
I guess it could go on for ever and some of these people are very well known among some but have never been heard of by many others. Also, the list would be different tomorrow :-) Music makes the world go round
