Question Tax Back from US purchases?

Off to the States on Monday for a couple of weeks work (if only the nightime temperature for Omaha wasnt down as -19 degrees!!!!)
I was planning on buying a couple of bits and bobs for Xmas (camera, sunglasses etc), and wondered if anyone knows how I go about claiming any tax back on the purchases I have made - can I do it at the supplying store, at the airport, or do I need to wait until I am back in Blighty?
TIA
SB

If you ask nicely, US stores will often give you a receipt for an inflated value Then go through red at UK customs and show them the paperwork for a refund. Be sure to post on here what they say

Do not do it.

C & E know more than you do.

For the small sums of money involved it's not worth while.

If you are honest you may get away with it.

My cousin had the bend over & rubber gloves treatment from a customs officer at Heathrow - I dont fancy risking it

I wasnt intending on importing hundreds of pounds of goods (as you'd be paying tax on those for importing them), just wondered what the official way to do it all is - I always was a coward!

I'm lost here. My other half bought himself a guitar from America and had to pay vat etc when it arrived. How come you can claim tax back coming into the country. Will you not have to pay vat as well. btw the guitar was American taxes paid.

My response above wasn't entirely serious

Of course, when you arrive at HMC they will hit you for any import duty and VAT.

It's not easy to get a bargain through legally although some goods are cheaper in the US and if the exchange rate is good (it's moved against us recently) you can make a saving.

It stinks, doesn't it. Why should our government benefit when we buy abroad

Every government does, it's not just the UK.

I don't think any of us anywhere would be that bothered by taxes if the governments all actually used the money purposefully in full.

But that's getting off topic now.

Hoppy, glad it wasn't serious, if Customs think you are taking the **** either under or over evaluating goods then they have every right to re-value to their discretion.
