As far as I know if the document is regarding earning money or things that are required for him to live, ie food, rent, etc., he should be okay, although I seem to think once he hits 18 he can cancel the contract there and then.

I do work with models, some of which are under 18. They cannot sign a model release for image publication, their parents/guardian have to do that.
In the eyes of the law, they are a minor until 18 with regards to that aspect. I would have thought it would be similar in the music business.
