I always (perhaps incorrectly thoguht) that it takes a "special" (read as unique!) kind of person to be a Special......

Doing the job being paid is a trial, but for free????? You must really enjoy it

ALL IMHO of course!

I did it for 3 years. Got a mixture of reactions from the regulars but enough support to make it worth while. I did it for fun but some friends used it as a route into the force.

There is alway the "community support officers". That does get paid

A mixture of Cynicism, dislike (thankfully deleted) and open mindedness..
From those who've done it, it appears it was a rewarding and positive experience... Of course some 'dinosaurs' will exist, but if you're the type of person who feels that you're there in a positive community job, then pay shouldn't really enter in to it..

My job pays far more than your average PC, so doing it for real is not a financial option, but some people have a calling to do something meaningful and positive.. Not to sit there moaning about how bad it is before drawing the curtains and going back to watching Trisha and then popping out to get pi55sed.....

I have a lot of respect for both the Police and especially people who'd happily donate a few hours a month to help in some way....

Some people would rather keep moaning... I for one fancy taking some action.

Thats very commendable of you mate. At least you'll be putting something back into the community.
I few of my mates have done it, some still are, and they really enjoyed it.
I applied to do it a few years ago, and was accepred, but unfortunatley my boss wouldn't let me do it.

By the way, Some Police forces pay their Specials.

Just for abit of info. for anybody living in the South East,
the Royal Auxiliary Air Force are recruiting RAF Police for the Tactical Provost Wing based in Henlow( travel expenses paid for).
Plenty of opportunities for travel (not all to bad places, ie. Australia, USA, Canada, Europe, Aisa, Africa etc.)and good pay.

Cheers CS. I'm assuming your RAF/Military yourself??

I did 22 Years as a TC and did a nice stint at Epi (12SU).

After coming out, the pay's definately got better, but the feeling of doing something worthwhile just isn't here. I've talked to a friend whose aserving PC and he's advised in various ways... But the feeling of being part of a good team again, doing something worthwhile is just too strong..

I did consider Aux, but fancy something different..
