Cumbrian Members??
Looking for a wee bit of help... got the opportunity to take over a business in Frizington and was wondering if anyone on here knew the area at all??
Its the Petrol Station/Laundrette/Garage/Carwash in the village that is the business in question.
- I know its recently closed down, but when it was running, was it a busy place?? Or was it one of these countryside Petrol Stations that are absolutely dead..
- From what you can see outside and if you used the place, does it look to be in decent condition??
Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Grant

Hmm Frizington, eh? I think the garage did quite well but couldn't tell you about the other bits. Not exactly the centre of the cultural universe isn't Friz. It's like a lot of small old West Cumbrian villages. Ex mining town lots of "local people" if you know what I mean.
In fact, the only reason I go there is to dump rubbish at the local tip!

The correct link is www.cumbrianscoobs.co.uk/bbs/
Frizington is in Copeland Borough - www.copeland.gov.uk
It is also just down the road from a place called Rowrah multimap where there is a largish outdoor karting track www.cumbriakrc.co.uk so one would assume a degree of passing trade from that.

I have a few other contacts in the funding area - I'll ask what's available if you are interested

Thanks for the info guys... Rusty, if you could have a word with your contacts and see what/if any support is available for people taking over new businesses then that would be perfect.

Will Do.
If you are looking for an angle (USP) on the petrol aspect, the only Optimax selling Shell station serving both Whitehaven and Workington @ Bigrigg shut down (or at least stopped selling Optimax) a while back and we all trapse through to Cockermouth (where there are two! ) or fill up with BP Ultimate.
I stand to be corrected but even Whitehaven's Tesco doesn't yet sell the 99 stuff...

OK
I have spoken with a colleague called Anne Cartner from an organisation called The Hub - http://www.thehub.coop/ - but whilst they have access to nearly £1 million of funding, it is only for social enterprises or companies limited by guarantee. For more info, call Anne on 01946 834 713 (works number)
If you, as I interpret it, are looking at starting a commercial enterprise then Anne advises it would be worthwhile contacting Diane McCracken at the West Cumbria Development Agency - 01900 65656 - as you may qualify for funding for starting a commercial enterprise under the West Cumbria Development Fund.
Finally, it may be possible to get some money out of DEFRA as part of the Rural Regeneration Fund.
If you do contact any of these agencies, could you please let them know the information came from Anne at the Hub?
Cheers, Jonathan

To the naysayers - without inward investment, any region will only remain in the rut of social & economic deprevation. I'm sure any business person will be able to weigh up the pro's and con's of investing in a business without the echoing of negative stereotypes

Thanks Jonathan, really appreciate the help you've given me. I'm awaiting figures, survey, photos etc of the site being e-mailed to me and if all is fine then I'll be seriously looking at moving this forward quickly and will definitely contact Ann and chat about which people she recommends.
Cheers,
Grant
