Default Mathematical anomaly (or is it) 2 = 1

How about this one then, it demonstrates how you can make 2 equal 1 (or does it) Can you spot the error?

If we take two numbers, and call them X and Y,
Lets assume that X = Y

then

X - Y = 0

and,

2X - 2Y = 0

so then,

2X - 2Y = X - Y

another way of doing this would be,

2(X - Y) = 1(X - Y)

If we then cross devide both sides by (X - Y)

we are left with

2 = 1

I think you'll find it is. Common bug in some computer programs as asking a microprcessor to divide something by zero "does not compute!"

I don't follow your logic... Because it can't be computed, it can only be infinity?

1/1 = 1
1/0.1 = 10
1/0.01 = 100
-----
1/0.000000001 = 1,000,000,000

So as the number being divided tends towards 0, the value of the equation tends towards infinity.

So there! nerr!

It is infinity since any number divided by 0.000000000000000000000000001 is huge, so the closer you get to dividing by 0, the closer you get to infinity

You're absolutely correct, except x/0 is not equal to infinity!

1/0 is not possible:

OK, saying a/b=c is the same as saying b*c=a

There is no value of c where 0*c=1

(Edit: but I had to think about it )

I suppose so, although it depends which i and j you refer to. I was always taught that infinity was a concept and not an actual number, which AFAIK is true as you can't numerically write down infinity.

No it's my favourite foodstuff.. that and cake - I love a nice bit of cake.

Pi, on the other hand is a real number but it's irrational. Infinity isn't even real - fancy that!
