Once again I turn to the oracle that is Scoobynet for advice.

My wife has an engagement ring from a previous charmer who tried and failed to gain her hand in marriage some 8 years ago. The ring is a single diamond solitaire (1.08ct) very good colour and clarity, claw mounted in a platinum band. It is valued at £5,850. She obviously doesn't wear the ring and we want to realise on some of it's value. I have looked on ebay and rings of upwards of £1k don't appear that often and never seem to make reserve etc.

Any ideas on places to go to sell this ring? We would be happy accepting 50% of it's actual value just to get shot of it.

surely if you offer a ring and she says no, you close the box and take it back?? don't let the lady whos just blown you out and wrecked your evening keep it!! especially when its worth 6k !!

When my mate's engagement broke up he demanded the ring back. The cheeky b!tch wanted to keep it too! That was only worth about a grand.

He has the same problem though... what to do with it. Nowhere will give him anywhere near what he paid for it! I told him to keep it for next time!

 

£6k to the guy that proposed to her 8 years ago was nothing. Lets just say he was rather comfortable in the wealth dept. My wife decided that love was more important than money so married me instead. Fortunately for me she bought with her this ring and many other tokens of his affection from times past. LOL

Yes we have the valuation certificate which details stone colour, clarity etc., it was revalued earlier this year for insurance.

I think that we will approach some local jewellers but feel uncomfortable walking in saying "wanna buy a ring?". Obviously we want best price for the ring and I know that jewellery has something like 200%+ mark-up on trade price. I wouldn't have thought a local jeweller would offer more than £1.5k for the ring but will try.

We had wondered about auctioning through a specific jewellery auction house. Any ideas in this area?

In some ways I dont blame you for selling it, but in others it just doesn't feel right..........

IMHO anything you get for it is better than nothing, If you dont intend to give it back of course.

Take a look inyour Yellow Pages. Loads of jewellers will buy second hand jewellery. You'll get between half and a third of what it's worth

Don't go to a jeweller. Valued at £5850 and they will probably say they are doing you a favour by offering £1800.

Contact an auction house. We sold a diamond ring through a Sotheby's special jewellery auction. Got about twice as much jewellers were offering. dl

 

And then give the ring away for free to some nice girl on SN who would appreciate it

 

If that is an insurance valuation i imagine its a very generous figure. so the retail value is likely to be less.

Claiming on Insurance I am not at all comfortable with.

The ring would sell in a Jewellers window at somewhere between £3,750 and £4,500. I am going to look into auction houses for jewellery before going round the various independant jewellers nearby.

David Lock, You mentioned Sotheby's, did you try any other auction houses?

 

My Tip: Dont pi$$ your missus off ...she'll obviously take you for all your worth!!!

 

Hi - no 'cos I had a pal at Sothebys and they have a local outlet near me in Sussex so I popped in for chat and took it from there. Took some time to get paid though! If you phone their HQ in London I expect they will send you a catalogue of the last auction and dates for future auctions. Christies will be the same I expect.

Note a local jeweller said that he would run a sort of mini auction with people he knew might be interested and sell to the highest bidder. The estimate he gave me was about half of the final Sotheby's auction bid and I strongly suspected it was a fix. dl

 

PMSL .....your not comfy with claiming off your insurance, which by the way is a sure fire way of getting the money you want.......But you dont mind hanging out for a good price on a ring which is dubious as to its origin....

Step back a few paces and have a think about what your saying ....

No slight on the bloke selling this but lets look at the facts .....

1. Ring was given to his wife a while back as a token ready for marriage.
2. Ring was not returned for whatever reason
3. The guy wants to sell the ring now
4. Not happy with putting it on E-bay or through a local jewel merchant as not getting enough money for it.
5. Thinks its not morally right to drop it down a drain and claim on house insurance, or some such thing.


Sorry but it dont sound good to me ...... whack it on e-bay and what he gets for it, he gets for it... Call it fate if you like.
