Default National Insurance - Student

Evening all,
Dated the 19th September 2005 the Inland Revenue have written to me.

"We are writing to you about your National Insurance contributions for the tax year 6 April 2003 to 5 April 2004, becuase we think you haven't paid enough for that your to count towards your State Pension."

They say my shortfall is £173.75 (total for the year)
I have tried to ring them but i'm sick of the engaged 'music'.
As a student in full-time education I didn't think I had to pay at all?

Will check their website again later this evening.

Wouldn't worry about it. By the time you retire there will be no state pension anyway as the country wont be able to afford it due to the number of old codgers going about....

Speak to an Indepandant Financial Advisor to be sure.

Bascially its up to you. In order to qualify for a full state pension you have to contribute fully for a certain number of years (I forget how many). If you pay the amount they have asked for, this is, in theory, one less year you will have to work in order to get your state pension.

TBH, I don't think it will be worth it. You are likely to work the right number of years in your job anyway, and as previously stated, the state pension is not likely to be much by the time you retire

You do not have to pay it, its a choice.

Just take advice on the choice you are making, to ensure that you make the correct one.

I got one of these the other month, it's choice if you want to pay the amount or not, mine said pay by 2010 or something, so i've got plenty time.
