Pete,
You are only being fed the 'media' version of events. If you live here or spend a lot of time here you will come to realise exactly how things are. Don't be fooled, the current civil unrest has very little to do with Saturdays Whiterock parade. That was merely the spark that lit the powder.
Peace - there is no peace. Hasn't been since about 1918 or maybe even before.
The "peace makers" are engaged in a process of appeasement. The republicans wanted rid of everything british - they are 95% there.
The loyalists - well they are not sure what they want - they are a very divided community, but they don't like the governments concessions to Sinn Fein / IRA.
This has led to two bitterly opposed sides reaching an impasse.
The government are committed to "peace" but it is "peace" at any price.
In a sense I am wasting my time trying to explain - because as an outsider it is highly unlikely you will be able to understand the "politics" or "sensitivities" involved - the UK government certainly don't.
It is wrong that you tar us all with the one brush - the majority of the people in Northern Ireland have not become directly involved, but having spent my entire life here it is hard to sit on the side and watch what is going on - it is harder still to listen to ill-informed comment from arm-chair experts on the far side of the pond.
99% percent of the Northern Irish people are first rate folks - sadly they rarely make the 6 o'clock headlines.....
