I am not a number, I am a free man!
Except on the Sunday 18th September when I will be number 42466 in the Great North Run.
I'm not running for any specific charity as I've already done a couple of runs for charity this year and everybody I know is pretty much "charitied out" That said, if I was running for charity then in hindsight I think I would be running for Childline so if you have some change you can spare then please visit them!
It's only a half marathon but please spare a thought for my blisters!
Cheers!
Rich

What time are you aiming for?
Best I've done in the GNR was 1:45, which I accept is rubbish.* Still, better to take part than to sit at home.
*And my slowest half marathon has been over 2 hours, which is even more useless.

1:45 is pretty good moose! Far faster than my pace! I'll be happy with 2:30 although extrapolating my pace last weekend over 10 miles off-road was more like 2:20

To contextualise, 1:45 was when I was 20, doing it for the second time, and well-prepared.
It's 20 years on, and the last half-marathon I did was 2:10, with a couple of full marathons in the 4:30-4:40 range. Getting older and slower, sad to say.

With age, what you loose in speed you gain in endurance.
Best time I've done for half-distance is around 1hr 20, but I'm no racing snake that's for sure. I used to work with someone (in his late 40's) who could bang out 3hr Marathons. Not quick if you're an elite athlete, but I'd be happy with that
Good luck Rich. Don't worry about times, just enjoy the experience.

BTW, if you do suffer from blisters get some Compede 2nd skin from Tesco's (most other supers should sell them). Just make sure your feet are dry before sticking them on.
Best thing I've found for preventing them.
