Default buying private cars........

with no tax, will I have to back pay the tax as of when it went out of date with the previous owner or will it start new from the month I buy it?

Your liability for road tax starts from the day you acquire the car. You are not liable for untaxed periods before this.

Good question.

Assuming they declared it as SORN, do they get some sort of receipt/proof that it's been SORNed?

Not sure what happens if it's just lapsed...?

Whatever the situation, you are only liable in law from the day on which you acquire the vehicle, it doesnt matter of the car was untaxed/sorn...the DVLA will pursue the previous keeper if they have evidence of it being kept on a public road.
