Breakdown cover
I just got my renewal through from the RAC for breakdown cover and it’s over £150!!! That’s for the top cover (recovery, home, take you where you want, onward travel with hire car or hotel if required, etc). The bizarre thing is, if I go on their website the price for a new customer is less than £130 – so much for customer loyalty!
Has anyone got any good recommendations for alternative companies? I've done a quick search but couldn't find anything. I checked out moneysupermarket for a comparison and it came up with tonnes of cheaper quotes but are they any good?
I’ve heard of Europ Assistance – apparently the largest in the world and only £60 for the same cover. Even Tesco’s was only around £80 and I bet most use the same recovery companies anyway!
Cheers

Try GEM Motoring Assist .
£50 for comprehansive cover (Recovery Reclaim)
I used to use them when I was living in the UK. You call them up if you have a breakdown, they send whoever is on their list of approved breakdown/recovery garages, you pay the garage directly for the cost of repair/recovery and then you send in a claim form. I had to use them a couple of times in 10 years motoring, always received payment by return mail.
The breakdown vans that come out are the same independents retained by the RAC/AA, so they are not employed directly, simply on a per job basis. But the quality is therefore comparable.
It looks like they now have a new option (Recovery Extra) where payment is taken care of automatically, but you pay a £20 premium for the service.
Checkout what they cover, it's as good as any of the comprehensive packages you get from the AA/RAC etc.
