Question Help with choosing a new dog ?

My Mum and Dad have recently retired and have decided on buying another dog. They did have a Westie but it died at 12 years old, about 3 years ago. Now they have retired they have decided on getting another dog but not a Westie as they think they would always be comparing it to their last one.

They asked me if i knew of any other dogs (around the same size) that would be suitable, the one i immediately thought of was the Border Terrier:

http://terrificpets.com/images/uploa...reedsadv28.jpg

As yet the only other option was one of those skittish little Yorkie things which to be honest is not really what my Dad wants to walk down the road with

So, has anyone got any advice as to which type of dog would suit them best?

get them a rottie

its about the same size as a westie for about 3 weeks, we have one, and my parents would never have entertained the idea of one before, in fact when I told them I was getting one they were like dont do it, they now look after mine in the week whilst I am at work, I nearly have to force them to give him back, he loves to walk, as they do and he is really is a wonderful companion.

consider all the options before making a decision

A second vote for a staffy

Our little un is nearly fully grown and isn't much bigger than a westie, loves walking/running/playing but will also curl up like a lap dog next to you for a kip, very loving dogs. Be lost without mine........ few more piccies

All depends on its breed lines and how its brought up.

Rotties have a bad reputation but in the real world in the proper breed lines they are very loving and well natured dogs, its only when they are born into the wrong hands that they proceed their reputation. Dont get me wrong they can have their fair share of temper like any other dog, but in my experience Ive not found many dogs more vicious and awful as the westie. might not agree but from the many I know they are nasty little g!ts.

Now if you want a small, mad VERY loving dog, got to go for a Bulldog

I'll second that as well, any dog can turn nasty, all depends on how they are kept/trained. I take mine dog training once a week, there's a few rotties there and they're as soft as sh1te, always rolling over for a belly rub The only dog there which barks at everyone and turns nasty is a westie, LOL.

My staff doesn't bark/growl at anything but then she's well trained, there is a danger of being licked to death though, haven't managed to put a stop to that yet

LOL.. its like a kid, really, VERY lively, they are not like the rep they are given of sleeping all day. hes very active and loves his walks although he can only manage about 20mins a day, especially in hot weather. very happy when getting his attention and playing with his toys but if youve had a long day and cant be bothered playing tug o war with him he'll sit and sulk, if hes tired he'll wanna get on the sofa and have a cuddle most of the time. Couldnt possibly ask for a move loving dog.

hes a boy (if you cant see his sack in the first pic..lmao) full of character, bitches are just as good, if you read up on them they always get a good reveiw for being a family pet and superb with children. They strive on companionship

well i have 2 bull terriers
litter brothers
had them for 18 mths now and they love each other and life in general
they squabble periodacally (the bigger one growled at the small one this morning over some cornflakes)
but all in all they are playful happy things and a mile away from the previous staffie we had in terms of temperement and behavior
as i write this I am missing the lil buggers at home asleep in the kitchen

How about a Lhasa Apso? We have one and she is awesome

She is one of those dogs that just makes the most of life. Loves going anywhere, loves people coming to our house, loves going in the car. Loves everything actually. She's also a real character, she does what she wants when she wants, but she's so loving too.

Another Westie.
Dogs (as people do) have different personalities (or doggiealities if you like)
Yes there would be inital comparisons to the last dog, thats only natural however I am sure they will grow to love a new one as much as the last dog.
I have Boxers and love the breed and often recommend the breed but lets face it, if they are used to terriers then prob as well to stay with similar type breeds.
I must admit out of all the little, ****ey, yappy ba$tard type dogs the Westies are the best of a bad lot
LMFAO @ sharks on a leash !!!
