I need to get a current account, but dunno what I'm doing - where is best to go? Are they all pretty much the same or do some have minimums on amount going in per month?

Was thinking HSBC as my friend has one with them and the online banking seems much like what I already have.

Assume nowhere will be open on a saturday afternoon ??

I bank with Smile and would definitely recommend them. Their accounts seem to give decent rates of interest and the site is user friendly and a doddle to use. You can pretty much set everything up online - though it will take a couple of days for paperwork that you have to sign to come through.

Or of you're happy with a regular high street bank you can pretty much set everything up on the spot as long as you take

1) some money
2) ID (Passport)
3) Proof of address (houshold utility bill)
4) a couple of payslips

I used to bank with Barclays but they pi$$ed me off after 20 years so i left, I have all accounts with Nationwide (current, savings, isa, credit card etc.) and they've always been good to me.

I've applied to Smile now. Takes up to 14 days to get transferred across apparently. My car payment goes out on 1st so they better get it sorted before then (though i am gonna try move it to later in the month!

Im with HSBC and beem pretty happy with them.

I thought Nationwide were meant to be good, and also you can withdraw cash abroad free with Nationwide, unlike all the other banks who charge 2-3% + 1.50 each transaction.

Only one to avoid I would say Halifax. They seem to constantly have offers on that would only attract brain dead people who dont look at the details, and they have that tosser advertising all their products - so that alone would enough for me to not use them!

Have current account with HSBC. No problem with the internet access either although I do have an issue with be routed to an Indian call centre where they can't understand a thing (even more annoying since I work opposite their main UK call centre!!).

This is a good point actually, I forgot HSBC used Indian call centres. I had a few problems when calling up to pay off my credit card - usually it was ok, but some you could hardly understand.

me: "I would like to transfer 173.55 to my credit card"
indian call centre: "very good sir, transfer you 1703.55"
me: "noooo "

New credit card can be paid off online so I nolonger have this problem.
