An iso image is a copy of the contents of a disc. You don't need to make one.
DVD shrink is the software of choice for anyone backing up a home video and will allow you to burn it to a cd I believe.

DVDshrink wont help you here. The only way to fit a full length film onto a CD is by using MPEG4 (DivX) compression and the finished result wont be particularly impressive compared to the original. The best site for how-to guides is www.digital-digest.com; you will need the DivX codec, DVDDecryptor and FlaskMPEG.

The scene way is to make the film into a SVCD, which will fit onto 2 or 3 cds. You keep reasonable quality, but not brilliant. If you must squeeze it onto 1 CD the quality will be aweful. XVid is another popular compression way forward, but this is really so you can dload a film quickly to be viewed on a PC.
Best bet is to buy a DVDRW drive, theyre dirt cheap these days, then you can backup a quality retail film onto a Single Layer or Double Layer DVD.

if this is a commerical DVD you will need to de-crypt the dvd first. if it is a old title you may still be able to DVD decryptor. most of the dvd encryption breakers have been run out of business, you can still download the software easy enough but getting the updates for the latest encryption methods is a PITA. but is fine for dvd's printed before june this year.
You can then use something like Auto GK, which will compress the mpeg2 from the dvd into mpeg 4, you can choose if you want 1 cd 2 cd ect.
you should only use svcd if you want to play it back on a dvd player that plays svcd. otherwise use mpeg4 (xvid).

www.doom9.org
has guides/links etc to all you need.
Get the godian-knot rippack and codecpack
I can rip (decrypt the DVD) and then encode (make into an AVI using DivX codec) dvds of my home videos with a couple of mouseclicks.
1xCD is really not enough for a full length quality move rip. I find a 120 min film with full AC3 5.1 DolbyDigital soundtarck converted to a 2Gig DivX is 99% as good as an original DVD. There's only a couple of areas where you can see the mpeg artifacts and thats only when watching the film for them...rather than watching the film to enjoy watching a film. Fog/Clouds is one area divx seems to struggle.
Thats with Xbox mediacentre with S-Video output + Dig Audio to my surround amp vs Sony DVD with S-Video output + Dig audio to same TV/Amp.
