They are only worth what individuals are willing to pay.
If you find the combination of the right plate and the right person you are laughing.

I bought a 3*3 a 4 years ago for £500 about the same as they go for now. It's nothing special but doesn't give away the age of the car & it's unlikely that it'd ever hold anything special to anyone to make increase dramatically. I didn't buy it as a pension fund, but as a plate I fancied. Buy one if you want one, not with a view of potential £££'s.

Sounds good! I`m wanting one to disguise the age of the car & keep its value rather than make loads of £££££££££££££

Like PG says, it's only worth what someone is willing to pay. You could buy a plate now for £3k. In ten years time when you might want to sell it, if no one wants it, it's worth nothing.
My mate did just that. Payed £3k for his plate. He swears it's worth about £6k now. Only if some mug is willing to pay it.
The only ones guaranteed to increase from new was those that spelt something like P1LOT. I think that went for £250k

It went for £66K at a DVLA auction in 1996.

It's probably a great plate if you're a pilot, but I wouldn't have paid that for it, even if I was a pilot!!

As I tell Mr MOT man it's a 93 & therefore it can't be failed on not having the cats. Unless you're a total nerd & know that UK Imprezas started from 94 & the imports from 93 and the difference between the two, then it avoids replacing the cats once a year.

thanks guys, tried all those (i used the bid by phone option for the auction purchase whilst sitting in a chinese restaurant so didn't need to travel) - i was looking for something less well-known on the basis that the plates i'm after are bound to be out there but don't appear to be available through the usual suspects

BTW, why do many of the plonkers selling plates on ebay say "rare plate". of course they're bloody rare; that's the point of them
i saw "1 TWO" on the road today - ££££££££££££

hard to say as i wasn't really paying attention to the plates i wasn't interested in. the auction i was bidding at was about 3 years ago and i bought RGR33N for about £4k i think (all this info is available on the dvla-som.co.uk web site under the auction section). can't remember what the reserve was, but there were about 7 people bidding against mine - was apparently one of the most popular on the day. hasn;t realised at the time, but DGR33N went on the same day for a lot less and that would have suited my mum, never mind i got the one i was after! DGR is now for sale on a number of the usual plate sites for about £7,500 i think. HGR is available at about £9k ish i think
