Default Buying cars privately (or not!)

Id forgotton how much fun it was...

Phoned up about a car (Focus) for my wife on Tuesday night from the Autotrader, car sounded good, and the guy sounded decent... So arranged to go through to see it tonight...

Got to his house and noone in, so phoned him and got:

"oh sorry, thought Id text you, its sold" aaarrghhh!!

£40 HPI, £10 fuel, and 2 hours of our time down the pan...

Complete *steward !!

This was the car, feel free to ring him to ask if its still for sale at about 3am

Exactly the same thing happened to me the other week, the bloke selling said to get there in half an hour which I did only to be told when I got there that he'd just sold it Then a couple of weeks ago we made a round trip of 100 miles to see a T reg with aircon that turned out to be a P reg without aircon and I've lost count of all the cars that have been in 'excellent condition' that have actually turned out to be a pile of poo

Me to him:

Because of the time difference, calling him at 3am BST will only be 10.00pm for me.

At < 2 cents a minute to the UK, it will be well worth it.

Probably best that next time you HPI it AFTER you've decided you want to buy it. It might mean you can't buy it at the first viewing, but that's probably sensible anyway. Besides - in this case, 2 trips instead of one would have probably been worthwhile given that it only cost £10 in fuel...

Have to agree, prob only worth HPI'ing a car before you see it if its a lot further away....

Must keep looking for more Focii....

We've just got back from spending the entire day looking at cars (again!) and it was a complete waste of time and money We've seen one with 100k miles on the clock not the 70k I was told on the phone this morning, one that seemed to have been resprayed with blue metallic mastic, one that was 2k more than the advertised price and walked away from countless others that were really dodgy looking. We've covered an area from Bradford to Dewsbury to Rochdale, then back up to Burnley, Earby, Ilkley and finally home near Skipton My other half has collapsed knackered on the sofa and I feel like a bag of sh1te and am still car-less. The whole day was a complete waste because stupid fookin people can't be honest on the phone Oh and one car I rang up this morning had about 80k miles on the clock which in fact turned out to be 145k

I hate looking for cars

Sweet Jesus, I've never seen cars that have been that badly mis-advertised.

1st choice is a Disco, 2nd choice is a Focus and the rubbish cars have all been Discos

We made the mistake of going to Motorpoint to look at a Focus today. I came out feeling like I'd just been run over by a steam roller after listening to the spiel of the salesman

The thing is they have a nice one year old Focus Zetec which will do me just fine and is a good price but I won't buy it because I don't want the salesman to earn anything out of me

Sorry Chris for hijacking your thread

Good call scoobychick I did buy from there, and had huge issues with the car after purchase.

No second set of keys, locking wheel nuts drilled off, some paint issues, turned out the car was an import when they said it was not...no leather, no brake pad warnings lights (found the hard way), then the engine blew. Ended up sueing them....won, but it took time

Bloody hell Looks like I had a lucky escape then. They were very, very vague on the UK/import thing too and tried to stitch me up with a load of stuff I didn't need like new number plates, valet, breakdown cover etc etc. All they seemed interested in was getting a £300 deposit out of me for a car I hadn't even seen, they were very, very pushy and got my back right up.

LOL.... the only car I got to to find it had been sold was in fact the subaru that I bought in the end...lol

agreed friday I'll travel down at 10:30am on the saturday for the car.... got there on time rang when I was on the guys street and he said he sold it half hour ago to be fair he had emailed me to let me know someone was veiwing it before me but I didnt have access to works email after I left at 5pm.... So Id drove all the way down to see it and couldnt then they contacted me 2 weeks later and said he still had it, the guy who originally bought it only put a deposit down and aparently lost him job so couldnt afford the car so i went and fetched it there and then....

although Ive seen many dogs avertised, usually I get a feel for how someone sounds on the phone, you can usually tell if they dont sound like theyre honest people
