Top Gear, and Empty Roads
The Top Gear Team are often asked how they can drive on empty roads when filming.
Do they close the roads? No!
Do they test at odd hours? No!
These words are from Jeremy Clarkson and are an eye opener:-
"So where are they, then, these empty stretches of road that we manage to find every week. Well, think about it. If all 31m vehicles took to the roads at the same time, and they don’t, then yes, 82,000 miles of road would be full. But that would leave 163,937 miles of road absolutely deserted!"
Get out, start driving those empty roads and stop looking at your CockLinks and crapping your nappies!!

246,000 miles of road, 31 million cars - that's 42ft/car isn't it? Say an average car is 13ft - that leaves 29ft of free space between cars, or 14 1/2ft either end. Even if only a quarter of cars are driving at one time it's hardly open roads...
Or can someone tell me where I'm going wrong...

Obviously the majority of traffic is trapped in the major cities, and the main arterial links between them during normal office hours. Which is great, 'cos I work odd hours, and often go out to deserted areas like the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire Moors and Derbyshire Peaks just for fun during the week whilst everyone else is either at work, or trapped in a jam trying to get there
Have a look at Dazza's video in THIS THREAD which was filmed in the Yorkshire Dales between 4-6am on a summers sunday morning. Count the other cars

****-link is a sordid game that some old men get up to in their spare time when not wasting their time on bulletin boards. In the ideal world of these infirm individuals people like Elton John and George Micheal are involved but that tends to remain a dream for most !
