Default Garage / dance music question...

Used to listen to a lot of pirate radio when I lived near London, things like Shine and Pleasure FM - which was what id call proper garage - ie quite vocal / latin beat, and not just R&B rip off which it appears to be now labelled as

Got MJ Cole's album which is fairly close, and Matt jam lamont which is also good.

Trouble is, where do you buy stuff like that? Some of the Ministry of Sound collections have some of it here and there - bordering on funky house. Track 17 on disc 2 of MOS Funky House is spot on as an example (Fallen Angels - City Life)

Anyone put a finger on what im after?? Any recommendations?

Ta.

You tried that iffy looking record shop in the triangle, between your favourite **** shop and your favourite 'entertainment' bar, Rubyz?

Yeh, back in the day Garage was similar to House music. Now, suddenly the commercial charty stuff label Garage as an "R & B" derivative.

You need to get hold of some decent underground stuff. Find an decent independent record store and you should find what you are looking for.

You normally find that the Gay Clubs play decent music. Not that I've been to one(well i did once, by accident!)

I was in bed!

I used to have Rinse Fm on all the time when I lived in london-great stuff.

Get hold of Tuff jam underground frequencies- both vol 1 (orange) and vol 2 (green), and try to get the 2 cd limited special edition.
Long deleted as they are from 1993 or so, but absolutely fantastic mix albums- mixed totally live and proper soulful Us garagey house- ie proper garage. Grab them on ebay.Ohm and if you find the 12" double packs, they are worth looooooads.

EZ's 'pure garage' series is very good too- the latest is the main room sessions 3, and disc 3 is more funky house stuff but the rest is just erm..pure garage... (pun fully intended)

For commercially stuff try 'Rewind: Garage Classics' (ministry of sound).

Not sure if thats the stuff you are after- but its not recent, and most of the tunes on these were huge at the time... and still get a good reaction nowadays in some places.
Its what I personally would call 'proper garage' (which is basically house music!).

I was supposed to knock up a mix cd of this stuff for someone on here ages ago- but i totally forgot....oops

Garage is House. It's just when it came over here they labeled some sh!te Uk Garage! Tis nothing to do with it. The names come from two clubs that where the originators of the sound Paradise 'Garage' and The Ware'house'.

House music originated from Chicago, back in the day. Can't quite remember how Garage came about. My brother would know but he doesn't post on here.

Garage for me was 93-95, Masters At Work, Todd Edwards, Morales, MK, all were must have producers at the time, all the Tuff Jam stuff and Matt Jam Lamont was 95/96 and started going all speed garage..wasnt my thing!

I've got mainly vinyl but some of the must have CD's and compilations of the time were:

Best Of Strictly Rhythm 1&2
Nervous Classics (had "The Nervous Track" on it absolute classic and ultra rare!)
No Repetative Beats

(there are loads more, I'm so sad I've just rung the Mrs and asked her to pull the CD's out for me so I'll list them later!)

Big anthems I remember:

Cajmere - Brighter days
South Street Players - Who Keeps Changing Your Mind
Masters @ Work Ft India - I cant get no sleep
Celine Dion - Misled (MK Mix)
Mariah Carey - Dreamlover (Morales Mix)
Nicole-Runnaway
Aly-Us - Follow Me
Djaimin - Give You
Harddrive-Deep Inside
Barbara Tucker - Beautiful People

Loads More!

Garage is more soulful / vocal than house. Proper garage has more of a 'fuller' sound, and chugs along.

It still winds me up that the term was *******ised over here for the bo-selecta type ****.

Sadly about the only places you can hear proper garage now played is gay bars, as previously mentioned. Fortunately I have a large network of gay friends in London (and of course a missus, before anyone asks) so I still get to hear it.

Sadly I just don't get time to DJ anymore, although I still buy the odd record.

B4 Boy that's a great site, I've just found a copy of a track that I've spent the last 10 years looking for Now I have a dilemma, do I buy it on vinyl even though I don't have a deck? Hmmm...

great site..shame about the shop....

They knock out VERY poor bootleg represses and compilations of some tunes taken from an Mp3, and advertise them as rare. Caught out me a few years back with something I was after for a while, despite me phoning to check. I know of hundreds of other cases of this happening with other people too.
They are also an absolute rip off!

Plenty of better shops about

What track is it scoobychick?

It's Gat Decor - Passion, but the early vocal mix from about 91/92, not the later vocal from the 96/97

However on closer inspection I've realised the one on that site is a 96 remix of the original so I've decided not to buy after all. This one here http://www.htfr.com/more-info/?catno=MR6899 It sounds like the one I want but something's not quite right...

I've got the Darren Emerson/Naked Mix version thanks to someone on Scoobynet a couple of years ago

Hmmm
The one I have is kathys passion- which is pretty rare.... the original vocal version that they couldnt get cleared for release (but put out on white anyway ) so redid- the redone version is the one you just linked to. that does sound wrong as its the revocalled one
No idea if thats the one you want?

One of my all time favourite tunes- gladly rip it from 12" to cd for you (if i can remember this time )
