American Troops ordered to avoid London

Well, I guess that's really showing the terrorists that they can't win. What's the average American tourist going to think of this advice?

Personnel, most of them from US Air Force units at RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath, in Suffolk, have been told not to go within the M25 motorway

Think you've got to take this with a pinch of salt. I was in Jakarta a few months back and both the UK Foreign Office and US State Dept were giving out warnings that their citizens should not travel to Jakarta - turns out these have been given for more than 3 years. Yes, there has been some trouble and security is tight, but as long as you were sensible then there was no problem.
That said, we have just raised our terrorist threat warning to its highest level - you can't really blame them can you?

Listening to Radio 4, story is that this order was given on the Friday (the day after) when many workers and companies avoided London whilst things were being cleared up. Likelihood is that order will be rescinded soon. So they have just been a bit slow on this aspect. dl

Place would be a lot quieter without them. Had the "pleasure " of having to share a tea room with some at a local castle this weekend. Glad to get out of the place. :

I wonder was it a ban or was it a warning along the lines of "because of transport disruption you are advised to avoid London unless necessary..." type of communication. As it says in the BBC report many organisations issued such things to their staff and many didn't officially lift such "bans" because they assumed that intelligent people would decide when the situation had returned to normal. It may just be that this is a misunderstanding driven by the need for the media to fill hours of airtime when they have very few facts. Under such circumstances simple "advice" can easily become a "ban" and in so doing generate several hours of speculation which is useful to fill all those so called news channels and programmes which contain little but idle rumour and speculation.
