I agree, just got home, was driving down a long straight road and mate got a bit over excited at the vastness of the moon.
then we all compared it to the size of the *** of one of his recent conquests

Driving back home last night at about 11pm I thought the moon had crash landed onto Earth!
It was huge and very low in the sky. Nice bright yellowy orange too. Looked pretty

Would you mind blowing into this Sir, whilst my colleague rounds up any little green men?"

If the moon looks big when it's near the horizon, try facing away from it, then lean all the way forward so you're looking at the moon between your legs - it looks normal size again. Something to do with the way the brain processes images means the illusion doesn't work upside down.
Try it - honest!

There was a substantial scientific text published recently on this very subject. I must confess that I only read a review of the work but even after several hundred pages it seems that it failed to present an acceptable scientific explaination of this optical illusion. As AndyC suggests just turning around and looking between your legs at it could save you having to read the book.
The full moon next July (i.e. 11th July 2006) will be the peak of this lunar standstill period and should be about 2 degrees lower than the moon last night. I hope to be at the Callanish stone circle to witness the event there, though it seems that others may also be heading that way. The alignment at Callanish makes for interesting reading.

Even Patrick Moore's been dragged out of the woodwork to comment on it...
