Question Paint gurus: Polyurethane Paint?

Dear Scoobynet...

I am trying to find a paint in matt/satin white that conforms to the following:-

1) Waterproof, even with standing water
2) Resistant to chemicals, urine etc
3) Non toxic (when dry, i.e no anti fungal components)
4) Hard wearing
5) Scrubbable/sterilisable
6) Available in satin white (or other amenable colour)

The best I can do so far is specialist (and very expensive!) yacht paint

Anyone have any suggestions for an alternative paint or epoxy?

thanks in advance...

TBH - for something waterproof when standing in water you need to be looking to the aquatic world, yachting or oil rig paint that kind of thing, and it will be expensive.

Unfortunately that is the way it is looking.... the link I posted above is 53 quid for 2.5 litres!

It will almost certainly be oil based too which will probably mean at least a month of airing to get rid of all the fumes! (its for an animal enclosure)

Why does it need to be "that" resiliant? If there is going to be that much water have you considered lining with a pond liner or something?

It's for my new burmese python.... humidity needs to be around 60-70% so there could be a lot of condensation running down the walls. She also has a habit of releasing large puddles of urine and urates which soak down under the substrate so the base surface has to be able to last and the whole thing be easy to wipe down/sterilise.

Ideally the whole enclosure would be moulded plastic.... but that is beyond my DIY capabilities!

Would garage floor paint do the job, a good few coats of that might do the trick.

This will be far superior to any 'tank' that can be purchased.... build pics will follow in due course, on the proviso you make no comments about my decor!

I suggest you either go with a Butyl pond liner which can can seal the joins on to produce a water tight skin. A good adhesive should stick it to a wooden wall backing.

The other alternative is to consider using ceramic tiles / glass with waterproff adhesive and grout and use silicon sealant at wall / floor joins and up the corners.

If you use paint, these joints will always be a weak spot.

Construct a glass fibre tub with a 6" upstand to the base of the enclosure, 1 layer of matting with a few coats of resin to lose any hairs that might poke through, then line the walls with coated stucco aluminium sheet ( stuff they build caravans with ) to overlap onto the fibregalss upstand.

Plenty of silicon, jobs a good un'. Probly about 10 times the cost of yacht paint, but what the hell, it will look the dog's when it's done

You forgot to mention that the paint has to be non toxic !

Anyway, what do you want a Python for ? do you live alone in a small Welsh town, drink Cider, smoke way too much weed and listen to a lot of Heavy Metal ?

1) Waterproof, even with standing water

Doesnt meant it wont leech toxins into the water, i.e. when scuffed.

Didint mean to offend but thats my impression of snake owners gained from the bits on Animal Hospital when they rehome 30 feet of reptile, did I touch a nerve ?

Chlorinated rubber paint can be used in Swimming pools not sure if its non toxic when dry though. And you should be able to get it from any good paint retailer to the trade.

typo... I meant point 3.... although I'd assumed you'd have seen your mistake by now and not further compounded the problem by admitting you watch animal hospital!

Yes, I was about to say tiles. Look at swimming pool lining stuff. And I'd guess that you can get ones which butt together and need a minimum of grout. Or is the ceramic too cold for a tropical snake?
