Asked My Boss For A Reference.....
......and this is his reply.
"I have a rule of not writing written references and wouldn't accept
them as an employer, would be happy to supply a certificate of service
when it may be required. Would be happy to act as a verbal referee as and
when you require."
Brief Background Is...
He has said on letterhead "that due reorganisation....blah blah blah....the position of xxxxx may be at risk." xxxxx being my position.
The new position has been advertised in the papers.
He was unable to find suitable external candidates, but my application has not been rejected, yet.
He says he is forced to re-advertise with the company name/logos visible.
Would you say he is out of order in not doing a written reference ??

Maybe im not reading that righ, but it seems like your re-applying for your own job!
So why would you need to get your boss to write to himself?
Sorry if im reading it wrong but it is early

Call me cynical if you wish, but I think it's just a PC way to give me the boot.
I am applying for the slightly higher position, but I feel that if my (new) boss liked what I had to offer, different methods could have been used.
My point about asking for a reference is that I am looking elsewhere, just in case. It's good to have something in writing so you know where you stand. Also he can't really write one thing, and say another.
My 2nd point in asking is that when I jump countries, I have something in writing that I can show potential employers. (BTW NZ to Aus)

It's quite common for companies not to give references. Often they will just respond:
"I can confirm that x worked for this company between [start date] and [finish date]"
It all started with companies being taken to tribunals for supplying negative references.

It is not unusual for companies to not hand you a reference, there is the opportunity for abuse with that. However I haven't encountered anybody yet that wouldn't write or verbally provide a reference when approach by your new employer.

Presumably the new position is a completely different role from your current position? If not, don't think he can do that.......
ie, say your position is "company cleaner". He can't make that job role redundant and then immediately advertise for a "company cleaner".

Sound's like your boss is a prize ********, i thought they were obliged to give you a reference, even if it say's you were useless at your job, or whatever else he want's to put on it. Personally if that was my job advertised, and my boss would'nt give me a reference, i would think it's time to be moving on anyway.
