Las Vegas - Any views?!
I’m looking to book a holiday next year to go to Las Vegas for my boyfriend and I. He's fancied going there for a long time now and mentioned the idea, which after lots of searching on the Internet I think I may quite like!!
The trouble is (as always!), is that there are so many hotels to pick from, things to see etc etc, so I just wondered if anyone on here had been there before and have any recommendations of hotels to stay at?
Also, when is the best time of year to go regarding the weather, popularity etc?
Thanks in advance!

I stayed in the MGM Grand which was excellent. They also had the nicest cocktail waitresses, although I suspect not something of concern to you...
I would guess all of the main hotels are excellent. As you should visit all of them, which one you happen to be staying in is possibly academic. Pick the one that gives the best deal. Having said that, the Luxor has rooms with (very high) balconies on the inside, overlooking the gaming tables etc.

It's fun & extremely safe on the strip.
Off strip or north vegas is more seedy but also quite cool. There's a new strip bit and an old one - the older bit has some classic places like Circus Circus - cheap but slightly run down now compared to the newer places like the Mirage or Bellagio. I stayed in the Venetian, which was grossly over the top and generally great.

I found the place fascinating but on the other hand boring
On one hand you have the sights of the place itself which is a real sight to remember but that soon gets boring When you've done that all there is to do locally is sit in a casino which wasn't my idea of fun.
We hired a car when we were there and that opened the place up We drove to Hollywood and back in a day though The hoover damn is impressive too and recommended and so is the las vegas speedway, they let us in free to stand ontop of the pit garage to watch the indy lite (sp) cars testing With the us airforce jets close by to the track doing low level passes that was very memorable
I have mixed feelings about the place but would go back.

I went for two weeks which is too long imo. One week is enough to do everything.
Don't just stay in one hotel, stay in two or three, one at each end of the strip and one in the middle for a couple of nights each. They're all their own little worlds so experience as many as you can.
Things to def do are a couple of shows - Blue man group, Elton John, and various others are a must. Go to the top of the Stratosphere tower, the view is amazing. Theres some pretty hairy rollercoasters on there too
There are a few big/fast rollercoasters in the hotels that are fun, esp at night. New York New York has a good one, as does the nescar cafe in the Sahara. Circus circus is fun too and has an amusement type park.
Trips by whilrybird to the grand canyon and Hoover are amazing too. Also go on a roadtrip to the canyon which gives you another perspective.
Nigthclub wise there are loads in the Casinos. The best ones are Ra, and Rain. If you want to go celeb spotting go the hard rock cafe and hotel, it's where anyone who's anyone is currently seen. I met Paris Hilton there Another good club is Ice which is probably the best club in the world technically. Godskitchen now run it on Sats so it should be good. All the other clubs in hotels just play Hip hop and R+B and are quite boring. It's a MUST to get VIP'd up for the clubs otherwise the experience is pretty ****. Speak to taxi drivers and belhops in hotels etc to get sorted as they all have contacts. Theres loads of strip clubs too and again, ask the taxi drivers which are best, a lot will offer a lot more than lap dances if that your thing!
If you go in winter it is COLD, very COLD. When we were there it actually snowed, the first time it had in 20 years! Summer is very HOT, go in October for a decent mid.
Good luck!

I went in late November - tshirt in the day, jumper/jcket at night tho. It's the desert.
Crazy Horse Too is the pick of the stripjoints if that's your bag. The stratosphere rollercoaster is most the appalling and scary thing ever.
Definitely second the car hire idea.

Went for a few days last year stayed at the stratosphere, Which was really cool you must do the rides on the top, the one which tips over the edge scares the crap out of you. I got very lucky with weather went in March and hit a heatwave got temps of 100f everyday!!!!! As someone else said goto the Hoover Dam as well it is a amazing piece of engineering. I`m planning to go back at some point.

You can't go to Vegas, and NOT go to the Grand Canyon, you can fly there from Vegas, or if you're hiring a car, drive, i recently returned from 3 1/2 weeks in the US, flew into Denver, and drove 3810 miles to San Francisco...
Fantastic place, Vegas was brilliant too, went to the top of the Stratosphere.... bit high, but cool once i'd got used to it!
The casino's are just so unreal it's bizarre.... there's a car museum in the Imperial Palace...cheap if not free to get in.... and well worth finding it!!! some wel nice cars in there..... and all that on the 5th floor!!!
You don't need to stay in the poshest place in town, after-all, you're only gonna sleep there!!!
Ron..
inside the venetian....and NO thats NOT the sky!!!
Just one of the rooms in the Imperial Palace car Museum...
Over the edge on the Stratosphere.. no i didn't do it!!
And the Hoover damn from the air... you wouldn't believe that that little bit of concrete is 1/4 miles across would you...??

Just got back from there!! I was there in mid April. Excellent place!!
We stayed on the MGM Grand, which was right in the middle of the strip on a the cross roads. There are loads of hotels, but i would pay a little extra and get on the strip. It can be a bit rough further out you go.
Weather was hot!! dam hot!! Just worn shorts and t shirts for the day and shirt for the night. Take plenty of money, i spent all of mine, which was a lot. It didnt help meeting a friend out there who was on a weeks stag party!!! So ended up getting dragged around with them.
Careful when you gamble, I lost a lot, but my mate won $2500 on the first night!!! Then spent the lot on the P**S. The place never shuts!! THe drinks are free when you are at a table or on the bandit machines. We used to sit at the dollar Bandits (only spend 10 bucks) get loads of free beer, then go out.
I would go at least once!!! Just to say you've been!!!
All the best Adam
Ps got to the RIO HOTEL and enter the vodoo lounge at night!!! Best thing you will ever see, and Carnaval court (nr Harra's hotel) during the day Excellent

I was there a week or so before Ron
Loved every minute, spend £1500 in 4 days and would go back again tomorrow.
Stay on the strip if poss, and avoid staying at Stratosphere, Circus Circus, both old **** holes now, Vegas for chavs.
We stayed at Belagio, a little stuffy, prefered Caesers Palace, had a better atmosphere and more places to chill out and drink beer, plus the shops were better too.
Mandalay Bay, Venetian, MGM, all very nice too.

I've been to Las Vegas several times, it's one of my favourite cities. I've only ever been during the Summer months, and it can get very hot. Was 50 degrees last time I was there.
I'd look to stay in a hotel midway along The Strip - something like The Mirage, Caesar's Palace, Venetian, Bellagio - then you'll always be in the thick of the action.
You don't say how long you'll be staying for, but if time allows there is plenty to see out of town. The Grand Canyon is a must - but don't be tempted to drive there, did that once, roads are slow and it took 8 hours - book a tour on a plane or helicopter instead. The Hoover Dam and Lake Mead are also well worth a visit. Valley of Fire State Park is absolutely stunning in late afternoon and evening as the sun sets.
If you are planning a multi-centre trip or fancy spending a few days out of town, then the drive from Vegas through Death Valley into Yosemite is possibly the drive of your life, with the transition from the stark and alien (yet beautiful) environment of Death Valley to the lush green and snow capped peaks of Yosemite.
Gary.

Get the Time Out guide to Vegas, tells you everything you need to know, including saving money!
Top tip is pick up the free magazines lying aroud, there are loads of coupons - 2 for 1 champagne breakfast buffet at the Mirage - all you can eat tiger prawns, smoked salmon etc washed down with champers for $3 each with the coupon That was a while back mind.
Indoor Sky diving? its all at Vegas.
As said before, 2 weeks is too long, also google vegas hotels, phone them direct and one of them on the strip will give you a good deal - we got in the Flamingo (that have resident penguins - penguins in the desert!!) for $49 a room per night, where others were $100+
Learn Blackjack and find the dollar tables to practice on, $20 would last me a few hours, free drinks but tip everyone!! If a novice do not sit on the dealer's right, an amateur twist will upset the rest of the players. When confident then playing big money tables in the evenings is cool, if you stick to a routine you can get the odds down to almost evens.
You will enjoy yourself, but as mentioned before, its a wierd, WTF holiday.

When we went to Las Vegas, we stopped at the super8 motel; it was only a block or 2 off the strip. Apparently it is (or was at the time) the largest super8 in the world. That was a couple of years ago, but i think it was $40/night for a twin room.
Someone has told me (since we went) that if you put enough down as a deposit for gambling at the casinos, you get a free room.
Loads too do, all as covered above. I really liked the city and surrounding area, though some people think it's too over the top and tacky.
John.

LUCKY GIT!! We stay at Luxor, could not belive the size of the lobby/reception!! The place is like one huge theme part. Excellent rollercoaster at New York New York!. Food is cheap, its buffet city all you can eat for $5!. Grand Canyon is only a short flight away in a small light airplane, Hover Dam a short drive.

Stayed at the Luxor. When we checked in we were offered an upgrade to a suite for $29 a night. Thought why not. Room was about the size of Milton Keynes.
Gambled for 3.5 days (and nights) - won all our money back on the last night - the room was free (as we'd been steady gamblers) and we got a load of free gifts (****e but good pressies for the in-laws) and an invitation to join the High-Rollers club .
Coyote Ugly in New York New York must be on your list to visit - it's like being in the film .
much more than 4 days and I reckon you'd go mad - After 4 days we went to the Grand Canyon for 3 days - Take the "cessna" plane flight to Page dam .
ps Bellagio Fountains are a must too
The wife didn't like the Idea of Vegas before we went - Now she wants to go there for her next big birthday bash
