What JetSki?
Thinking about a JetSki .... 2 seater/3 seater - with trailer.
Not interested in mods. or fast engines ... just solid reliability.
Anyone any advice?
How much would I be looking at, new?
I am guessing about £6k?
Are they worth buying secondhand?

Seadoo GTX 4-tec. They're supposed to be very reliable. I'd stay away from 2-strokes as they need lots of TLC. Offshore performance in Poole have a decent range to look at.
Still miss my '99 GSX Limited!

I ALWAYS answer when I spot that I have been addressed!!
Tom:- Could you expand on what type yours is? Is 56 hours a lot? I know nothing about these at the moment .... but they seem to be inflicted with the same mentality as Impreza owners (mod, mod and mod again until it breaks?)
Coracle .... yeah, very funny!!
I am 77 in less than 2 weeks time and I feel if I don't this year I never will!

It is good to see that someone in the twilight of their years is stil keeping young at heart.
do you want a jet ski or a wet bike (if that is the correct term) my understanding is that a jet ski you stand up on (mostly) and a wet bike you sit on.
Heh, for all i know you might be getting it for the grand kids but either way - Good for you old timer!

Its a 2 seater with a 1200cc 2 stroke engine in it. 56Hrs isn't a lot as long as it has been well maintained (which this one has). I have heard of engines lasting for over 200hrs on these. Its a 2000 model, so is red and white. If you want to read some more about the model, the best place to look is http://ultra150.com/. The ski does have a few handling modifications, but these have only been done to cure the skittieness of the ski on ruff water. Oh and it has had a performance air filter put on by the previous owner. But other than that the ski is stock. What sort of riding are you thinking of doing. As there are really two types, sports and cruisers. I would say mine leans more towards Sports. A new (good) one would be a round £8000 with a trailer. You then need to buy Insurance + Wetsuit/Drysuit + Life jackets + Ropes and Security (wheel clamp). Then you have to put petrol in it. Which they drink at an alarmingly rate. I don't want to put you off but there are lots of hidden cost to start off with, as you need the right equipment to be safe. If you do get one you should look into doing a RYA jetski course it reduces your insurance and some places will only let you launch the ski with one. I'm looking for £3250 for mine.

Pete, I love the way you post this just after the "I save my money" thread
Search has gone, but last time this was discussed the general opinion was that you should hire them a few times before buying - by that time the novelty tends to wear off for most people. As said above, going round and round and round a lake is only so much fun.

There are a number of downsides of owning a jetski which ultimately does creat the "buy it, use it, leave it in the garage" scenario.
I live near Junction 8 of the M25 and the first problem was where do I use it? There's hardly any lakes near (of decent size anyway) so it was a trip to the Kent coast (Herney Bay or Margate) every other weekend. It was a long day too!
I found I was replacing the wheel bearings on the trailer every other month too, because of the salt water (not as bad from freshwater) and this was time consuming!
It's not a cheap hobby either - forgetting the initial cost of the ski, you've got to datatag it, insure it, service it, fuel isn't cheap (and a tank will only get 3-4 hours use), plus the fact that in this country, you can only realistically use it for half the year!!
That said, I had 4 years of great fun!!
