Default How to trace a number plate??

I bought a private plate at a DVLA auction last year as an investment for my son (he was only 3 mths old at the time!) and I now want to buy another plate (the same letters and number only in reverse format) for me.

I know that it has been issued, and is currently residing on a Yellow VW Beetle.

Does anyone know how I could trace the owner so I can make them an offer?

Any help (via PM) would be appreciated.

Thanks

You cant. Theres no provision for this, in fact the new DPA will prohibit it.

Of course, you can lie to the DVLA and they may well provide the registered keepers details; but when you make him an offer, **** him off and he compalins to the DVLA about their completely illegal divulgence: youre f*cked.

SS, not sure how you know it resides on a Bettle but it might be worth putting an advert in the local paper if you know the location. Apart from that you're unlikely to get any assistance from the DVLA, privacy rules. Wonder if it would be worth contacting one of the agencies with what you're after, they might be able to help?

rac web site will tell you what vehicle it's on.
have seen people looking for info on plates on ebay before - ie saying they'll pay £x for info on location and owner. would be nervous about trying that route though!

Good point, I hadn't thought about agencies. I'll post a note to newreg.com and see if they can obtain it for me.

As for knowing it's on a Yellow Beetle, I was only taking that form the info I got on the RAC website by typing in the registration number.

You should be able to get the registered owner's detail's from DVLC Swansea, don't forget to just tell them a "white lie" as to why you need it. Remember DVLC are a government agency, ther out to make money, there'd sell you there feckin granny for the right fee!

There is no way DVLA will release any information, because they are a Government Agency, they have so many rules and regs regarding data protection, it would make it impossible to do so.

Imagine if they did, some chap cuts you up on a roundabout this morning, get his details and send the boys over. - Dont think it would go down too well somehow.

DVLC send you a form for you to complete and return prior to them releasing the information - the form makes it quite clear that obtaining the information by deception is a criminal offence. So if the owner did contact them and complain you could be prosecuted for fraud or the obtaining information by deception......if they could be bothered they would have a pretty open and shut case for acheiving prosecution.... and those aren't convictions you want against your name.

How about a beetle bulletin board or trying to get a list of VW dealers and writing to them (tedious but with a word processor and mail merge nothing that couldn't be done in a few hours) - maybe offer them a finders fee?

Good luck

Trust me, just don't lie to the DVLA or use any other means to find this. Data Protection Act is begging to be broken here.
Call the DVLA, tell them in all honesty what you want and ask if they can pass your details to the owner. They may do this and then of course the owner need only pass you his details if he wants to.

In fact from memory, i think you can make enquiries at www.dvlaregistrations.co.uk

Plus you say it's on a VW....try some of the websites

Thanks for all posts - certainly some good ideas there, and I will certainly be trying the VW websites and agencies, and may even try the DVLA.

A number of you have asked about the RAC website details, which I actually got from an earlier thread on SN. See below the link, but you will need to register. If you type in the plate, it will tell you what car it's on (if it is of course!), how many owners, the date of registration and date of last change of owners. I think it's fairly up to date.

https://www.rac.co.uk/myrac/login?so...spatchTo=myrac

It's nice to know that my ideal number plate (AD 1) is on a Lambo!

Write to DVLA and send a cheque for £2.50, they should then tell you, that's what I was told anyway.

Not so Im afraid: you have to have a 'good cause' for requiring the informtation. A good cause would be 'he ran me over and drove off' not 'I fancy buying his registered number'.
