Dan Brown's books - are his others as bad as 'Digital Fortess' and 'Deception Point'?
After reading a lot of the hype surrounding Dan Brown and his Da Vinci code, I borrowed his tehno thriller 'Digital Fortress' off my father and have got to say its one of the worst books I've read for a long time
Believing this must have been a one off (considering the hype and critical acclaim of Da Vinci Code) I stupidly bought his next techno thriller 'Deception Point' - and what do you know - its at least as bad a Digital Fortress, if not worse. Both books get off to a great start but fall to pieces by chapter 5, and are dead and buried by 3/4 of the book. I really struggled through the last 3 or 4 very boring chapters of Deception Point to finish it.
So, obvious questions - is Dan Brown a decent writer / storyteller (as some would have me believe) who just happens to have written a couple of duff novels? Is the Da Vinci Code a work of art, definately worth reading or does it too fall to pieces after several chapters? Should I quit reading Dan Brown now and switch back to Clancy, Jeffrey Deaver (and J K Rowing)?
Any opinions on this?

Digital fortress gets way too technical to maintain interest for the duration. Can't remember deception point? Was the the one about the something being buried in the ice? If so it wasn't a great read, but would probably make a class Stephen Segal beat 'em up.
The DA Vinci code was a good read if you like code breaking - you can sort of play along. I much preferred the one about the vatican though (Angels & Demons I think)
I read Angels & Demons first, then the Da Vinci code then the other two. All the books follow the same formula - The main baddie is always portrayed through the book as being the main helper for the designated good guy. By the time you read the 4th book you can guess the plot and the characters by the end of chapter 1

I think the guys a complete fraud. Da Vinci code is an entertaining read but the concepts are completely unoriginal.
Read Holy Blood, Holy Grail by Michael Baigent which is the original piece of work.

If you want to read some decent techno thrillers which are a little different (and considerably better written than Dan Brown's), try some of the books by Neal Stephenson. Snow Crash is a good place to start. I'm reading Cryptonomicon at the moment - bit heavier and a very long book, but very well written.
