Film called Touching the void.
I was recently lent the dvd of the film touching the void, I thought it was going to be all about climbing and so put off watching it. Finally watched it the other day and all I can say is I'm glad I did. Its a true story of survival
depicting the harsh decisions people have to make to survive.
Anyone else watched it?

I felt that there was more to the film, there were some very strange events - like the guy at the base camp wondering which one he wanted to survive and why did they burn the clothes.

I read the book years before the film was made and several others he's subsequently written, some autobiographical, others novels. Joe Simpson has had more than one close call climbing, he could have died a few times over.
Other incidents include he and a mate left dangling on a rope above a several thousand foot vertical drop when an overnight bivvy went wrong (helicopter rescue job).
And there was the time when a crampon broke when walking back off a mountain. He fell past his climbing buddy until the rope between them went tight which catapulted his buddy off. His buddy passed him at high speed until the went rope when tight again and catapulted Joe past his buddy at ever greater speed. So it continued for about 1500 - 2000 ft I think.
Then there was the time he got avalanched off a mountain and was lucky to be thrown over a giant cravasse and not get buried in the snow but wake up to find himself in breathing fresh air.
If I ever got the chance to climb with him I'd be in two minds, I don't know if he's lucky or unlucky.

i too read the book before seeing the film and the book is far more harrowing than the flick , the film doesn't emphasise the pain and difficulty he had getting back to camp after he got out of the crevasse !! the book is far more graphic
