Default Car stolen

My cousins car has recently been stolen, the scum broke into house and found the keys, off they went. (also nicked my Aunts car in the process.)

He has been told that he cannot claim on his insurance for six weeks.
Is this normal?

I guess it is in case the car is recovered in the meantime.

It certainly used to be the case that a vehicle wasnt considered to have been stolen until 28 days had passed; up until then it was simply 'taken without the owners consent'.

One was a silver Astra, 2.2ltr coupe I think. The other was a small Nissan. Wollaston, Northamptonshire. Insurance co told him 6 weeks. Dont think he has been offered hire car as he has arranged lifts to work with a friend.

I can see them having to wait, but certainly not without a hire car!

When mine got nicked, Elephant immediately wrote the car off, cancelled my policy and started the investigation process. I didn't get a courtesy car because my policy was effectively cancelled.

The car was found a couple of weeks later burnt out so it didn't affect anything.

The police did nothing about this either

Cancelled as in they paid out immediately?

Nice, but what happens if the car is found? Do you get to 'buy it back' from the insurers?

LOL @ the paid out immediately! No, unfortunately not, but they started the investigation straight away. Still took 6 weeks or so to get my money.

Have no idea what would have happened if it was found intact.

That would depend. If it was an 'out of the box' example then probably not. The idea that my car had had the **** thrashed off by some joyriding nobber would put me off having it back. However, if I'd piled a load of cash into custom parts I might want it back as the value of the whole would be well below the sum value of its parts.

You know what I mean?
