Pedestrian Safety
Just caught a trailer for "This Morning" as I was heading out the door today. Seems they are on about some device that can be fitted to your car for £50 that will save 100's of pedestrians a year.
Full details aren't up yet as they haven't shown it - but keep an eye out here http://www.itv.com/page.asp?partid=629
My car already has a pedestrian safety device fitted, it's called a horn! Maybe we need to start showing the green cross code adverts again and start putting some of the onus back on to the pedestrians.

Also, I do believe it says somewhere in the highway code, that under certain circumstances, if a pedestrian is already crossing the road, any vehicle then arriving, HAS to give way.
I don't have my HC to hand but shall check to be sure of my facts tomorrow.

It's here...
Twaddle full of Typos
Nice mention of SPEED KILLS at the bottom...
No mention of WALKING OUT IN FRONT OF BUSES KILLS though...
Apparition - If you turn into a side road, any pedestrian about to cross, or crossing, that road has right of way.

Rather pathetically, they fail to point out the proportion of such accidents that are caused by drunken pedestrians wandering out into the road in the first place. See the RAC Foundation's report on the subject.
Olly's right about the horn; maybe for half that £50 budget we could just have a sign across the windscreen that says, "Get back on the pavement, you drunken idiot! I'm not a f**king taxi!".

having complained twice recently to the local girls' school headmaster/mistress i have noticed a slight improvement in the road sense of all the girls who normally cross pelican crossings when the red man is lit.
as ollyk says, bring back the green cross code man! ...and the hedgehogs...and "charlie says" etc (showing my age now!)

they should be issued a license and given points for misdomeanours - 'specially if they go too slow!!and they should be made to be innoculated & snipped!

Yes there is no mention of there being any onus on pedestrians for their own safety in that article. It is almost as if it is not PC to mention that pedestrians should be careful when they are crossing the road!
It really is very dangerous to cultivate the idea that pedestrians can just step onto or walk along the road when there is a pavement that they can use. I have already mentioned the problems drivers have with them in my town which has got narrow streets.
I often find that if I am driving towards a pedestrian crossing and a pedestrian is walking towards it but not on it, then I will get all the grief from them if I don't stop to let them cross. It is just not their right of way and they should be made to realise that. It could be very dangerous especially with children. If they are already on the crossing before I get there then that is fair enough as the law states. Drivers have got enough distractions as it is without making it worse.
A proper government campaign to make the law clear to all and to make pedestrians actually think and look before they enter the road would do a great deal to reduce these problems.
As Olly said-bring back the Green Cross code and teach it in schools.

isn't that hedgehog ad the green cross code replacement.
tbh i think it's a bad show that pedestrians take liberties like they do by stepping out without warning. it should be pretty obvious that car vs human = tears so why people carry on is beyond me.
defo a good idea for old folks and children though as it's these types of pedestrians that need protecting.
a bit off topic but this device is due out in the next year or so.

pretty cool stuff imo

I think they need to rework the add where the car locks it's brakes up and hits the kid. Something like "Don't run in to the road without looking otherwise you'll end up dead like this daft litle pr1ck"
