Default alternator problem

ignition light (battery symbol yes?) on my little runabout is staying on when car is running now. It dims a bit as you speed up and gets brighter as you stop.

Is this a sign the alternator is knackered or could it be telling me something else like the batteyr is knackered?
had a look under the bonnet and the belt seems ok and is spinning the laternator fine.

any info appreciated. Don't wanna replace the wrong thing

The belt can slip under load despite looking good with the bonnet up.

It could be a duff earth.

It could be a dodgy connection on the back of the alternator.

It could be a duff battery.

But it's probably the alternator I'm afraid.

Most good scrapies take all electrical items of and sell them of the shelf, Halfors are pretty reasonable for recon alternaters.

A scrappie will usually let you have your money back if it's duff so it's often worth trying one or two as it's easy enough on any car. No point in getting yours rewound/reconditioned, most motor factors will do an exchange unit where you hand in the old one and good a good wedge off of a reconditioned one.

I wouldn't bother buying new from the manufacturer of the car, you'll pay through the nose. If you can't find a recon one at somewhere like Halfords, see if you can go direct to the alternator manufacturer (Bosch/Lucas) with their part number from your unit.
