Default Sea fishing?

Does anyone on here have any experience with sea fishing from a boat?

I’m crossing the bay of Biscay in late August on a friends boat and were planning on trying our hand at fishing on the way, does anyone know anything about sea fishing or could point me in the right direction?

Cheers

Pete

I've sailed across Biscay a few times now and every time bar the first it has been pretty lumpy such that fishing was the last thing on our minds!! It tends to have a deep oceanic swell coming in from one angle and a wave driven chop from another angle which, together with a rather sudden change from deep water to relatively shallow water, can make for some rather interesting sea states... but that's another story...

With regard to fishing you should be able to hook into shoals of mackeral on normal feathers or if you feel lucky you could troll whole mackeral for tope, but you might end up with a dolphin if you're not careful, expect to see a friendly group of them at least once a day as you get further south!

Thanks for your PM Pork chop, what’s this about just dropping off a spinner?

AJM,

I’ve only crossed the channel from pool to Guernsey out and around there for a couple of days on to Alderney and then back. So the Biscay’s a big jump for me but I’m looking forward to it. They’ve sailed it a couple of times and have mentioned the dolphins sounds superb!!!

Can you fish with feathers whilst sailing?

Cheers

Pete

Yeah, unless you have a 20 knot racing boat you should have no problems feathering!

Are you going straight across or taking the scenic route?

What I mean is you can go the long way around the edge or the short way straight across the middle, I'd guess you'd be going straight across unless you have a lot of time to kill!

Easier to fish with feathers or otherwise if you stop sailing and drift with the tide though.

In my experience ones either going too slow or fast.........dont know bout mackerel ...iid imagine theyre limited to certain areas.Last time i went across biscay we had 4 days of flat calm ,in the middle (not a lot of use for fishing)......after Corunna picked up the trade winds and going to fast., plenty dolphins.mind..My other experience ,across the pond , we were definatly too fast ~12knts most of the time ...although on the slower days some of the boys made attempts ......lost a nice new shiny lure to summat large............did actually catch one fish which we ate , although between 9 he didnt last long...........
Id take back-up provisions......................

lol!

My biggest catch was a fecking great trawler off Dodman Point in Cornwall. The git changed direction to go behind our stern as I was furiously trying to wind in several hundred yards of dacron braid with a great big barrel lead and whole mackerel on the end.

Needless to say it got away, but it put up a good fight though!

LOL at catching a trawler.. We defiantly won’t be relying on the fish we catch to keep fed on the crossing but it would be nice and a good laugh to have a go... four days of flat calm! aside from not being good or fishing would be nice, especially if the suns out

Pardon my ignorance but what’ a lure?
