How do you meet new people?

How do you meet new people?
Sounds strange I know.
Having moved to a new area a few months ago and now finished sorting the house out I have realised I don't know a single sole in the area. I work miles away and all my friends also live miles away and it's just not feasible to drive 50 miles for a pint.
There are no 'local' pubs here, just what's in th high street and it's not like you can just go drinking on your own!
So I'm a bit stuck for things to do as i have no one to do anything with.
Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on how to get out and meet new people. The more I think about it the less idea's I have!!!
Help, I'm going nuts sitting in every night

Hello
With great difficulty appears to be the answer. It also depends who you are trying to meet.
Joining clubs is always a good start, badminton, karate, train spotting, whatever your interests are (or can be faked).
Steve.

might sound like a stupid idea, but it'll work.
go to a few of the bars for a quick pint, see which one you like the atmosphere and 'feel' of and work behind the bar there.
i work in a bar and have made more friends there than you can shake a stick at!
you'll find people who work in bars have quit active social lives too....

yea sounds like the way to go possibly. Other than that im not sure how you could go about it as you also have the disadvantage of not working in the area ?!

I would recommend joining a football (or whatever sport you are into) team, cant beat the social side of sport. Or even just a 5-a-side league, etc
If you're not into your sports then, as boxst said, just join a group that shares your interests.
Either of them should work.
I know exactly how you feel as i had the same problem myself once. Just take the plunge and you will be fine.

Getting the thread back on track (sorry), I found the Territorial Army to be very social - I often described it as a military drinking club.
If the army doesn't appeal, there may be an RAAF or RNR base near you, where there is less of an emphasis on physical fitness (still can't be a lard **** though ).
PS 84of300: At the risk of making myself sound like a geek, I'd assumed you were a fan of Star Trek Voyager, more specifically, 7of9.
