Out of touch with the real world if you think 'most people' earn 65k!! Maybe you think 'most people' must earn that much to pay for you and your Labour-voting chum's generous scrounger benefits?...

What I meant was those paying £2k a year are on at least £52k.

The average wage is £35k so its not too far adrift ....

that would be the street lights that have needed new bulbs in them for over 4 months, the police who turn up un-interested in a burglaries several days after the event, & the council staff who can't find planning permission papers filed only 2 years ago.....oh the library is OK though, bargain.

There're 65 weeks in a year arent there?....

Im not as stupid as the average Labour voter, you mentioned your council tax as being approx 2.5k, then claimed 'average person' earnt that in 2weeks...

As far as average wages go, its something like 24k for the UK as a whole, however the median wage is something like 18k which probably gives a more realistic picture.

In all fairness Pete, the difference between 52K & 35K is 17K hardly what I call "not too far adrift"
However, our Council Tax has gone up about £10/month but I do live in a countryside town with all the amenities.

I think where some people have got a fair arguement is, for example, my one friend lives out in the sticks - his back garden is a forest!!!

He pays out of his own pocket for his septic tank etc to be cleared out. No street lighting - country lane. Bin gets emptied though

He pays more Council Tax than I do - we both got roughly the same size house.

Where's the justice in that?

£18k??

Yeah right! Like anyone would work for that!

My point remains valid, anyone with a Council Tax of £2k+ don't earn less than £52k

**** BS ALERT ****

The median is actually £22060 Pete - but dont let the facts get in the way of your arguements though eh?

Hmmmm, average wage figures?
4 blokes
1 on £15k
1 on £20k
1 on £25k
1 on £60k
Average is £30k which clearly isn't representative, but hey ho, anything to support ones argument eh! Stats can be moulded to give any figure really, depends on what you want the result to be

Pete, you really are a complete twit. Please tell me you're not suggesting that the average or median wage has gone up in line with council tax??...because that's what it sounds like. I would suggest that if your wage has increased fourfold, that will be because you do a different job or got a very good promotion or two.

What I thought we were debating here was the huge increase in council tax bills over the past 8 years - this cannot be doubted. As a percentage of take home pay for the average punter, it's much greater now than it was 8 years ago. I personally don't see a HUGE increase in performance of my local council/police/schools. Maybe you do? What I do see, from personal experience, is many more people working in local authorities, doing strange jobs that I'm not entirely sure the country needs...but hey, you're always right.

This thread shows what a farce council tax is. Why should someone on here be paying 3-4x as much as someone else for the same (****e) local services? They're just that, services, so everyone should pay the same (with discounts for the genuinely hard-up or old folk on state pension). It should have **** all to do with how much you earn or the size of house you live in.

Get rid of the Party from politics. Things are only going to get much worse. With devolution into regional assemblys you can expect the price you pay fro services to increase exponentionally at an alarming rate. The reason and blame for this will be passed from pillar to post. Local government will blame national and vice versa on a much larger scale. Council tax levels are a taste of things to come. Get rid of the Party system and a lot of the attraction of entering politics is removed for these parasites.
Its simple really the more levels of government that there is, the more scope for skimming from yours and my hard work and not be held responsible for any of it. All this media BS over asylum, immigration, crime and drugs, and guns et al is just a ******* smokescreen that the populous are to dumb to see past at the real issue. Which is politicians being out for their own kind. People need to see that these issues they discuss and talk about on their tea breaks etc are constructed to give them something to moan about and stop them from moaning about greedy party politicians skimming away at the pot.
