The ones I've tried only seem to do the spray, was after the drops that I remember as a kid turned the skin yellow, hurt like hell but worked brilliantly

As an alternative you could try asking for betadine (povidone-iodine). It comes in various forms (creams, washes etc), but the paint on alcohol based variant is what hospitals use to disinfect the skin prior to surgery.

I would be surprised if it had been officially withdrawn from sale in UK, it's probably more to do with lack of demand as no one uses it anymore. I expect a small "old school" chemists would have it.

I bought some a few years ago from an "old school" chemist and he was delighted that somebody actually wanted one of the traditional remedies rather than the newfangled stuff.
I wanted it as a compact bottle for a first aid kit and it only cost something like 50p

Betadine - freely available from any pharmacist in France
Take the scooby and come over for the day, it's Easter Monday and ... wait ... all the chemists are closed. Try tomorrow
