Default Any advice on operator licences ?

I am hoping someone might be able to help me!

I need to buy a 7.5 t box van ( Iveco or similar ) to transport my quad bikes from my house to my land which is two miles away. I am opening a quad biking centre and need to keep the quads at my house for security / logistical reasons.

The question is do I need an operators licence to do this ? Even though I am running a business at the land, the actual journey to the land is surely commuting and I am only carrying my own personal property.

Any advice appreciated !

I can't give you a definitive answer but my understanding is that you need a OL to own and/or run the vehicle. E.g. if you hire an LGV for more than a certain number of weeks you need an OL. Therefore you will need tachos, 6 weeks checks and so forth. If there is an exemption for "non business" use, then I am not aware of it.

Would using a decent trailer overcome any problems (but I am sure you would have consideredd this)?

Road Haulage Association and Freight Transport Association have the info too.
It isn't cheap to get an O licence.

I'm not sure about non-business use either, but I'd say that you will probably need an O Licence for it.

I think they'd perhaps take the view that carrying the quads back and forwards isn't simply commuting.

John.
