How about a present for every year of his life - instead of one big pressie buy 50 little ones.
I did this for someone's 60th once and they absolutely loved it. I wrapped up all sorts of little bits and pieces - their favourite sweets, a magazine they loved, personal little items based on what I knew about them.
Just write down every last thing you know about them and what they like and hit the shops - took ages, but the thought behind a pressie is always way more important than the pressie itself.

Being a bit serious here but 50 is a bit of a milestone and none of us is immortal.
Irrespective of present, think about what your dad has done for you over the years and, assuming you appreciate this, tell him and thank him if that's how you feel. Again assuming you do, tell him you love him. It isn't soppy.
There are many people who don't ever do this and live to regret it.
All imho.
