****e IMO!

Stayed in cancun, well the hotel was bad for a start which aint good for an all-inclusive, half the guests were all-inc half werent so couldnt just go to the bar and grab a drink, had to go to a 'cashier' and get a ticket then go to the bar friggin ridicuolous.

I adore mexican food and thought I would be drinking sol/corona which I love till it was coming out of me ears! The hotel served something that said 'corona' on draught but tasted ****e, no sol even though it was 30p a bottle in supermarkets. So beer was ****e and I can get a better mexican at chiquotos!

Very commercialised and full of americans, so you will either be ok with that or it will drive you potty! downtown cancun is expensive too, 2 milshakes at the haagen das there was a tenner!

Beware the one price for everything clubs too! Pay to get in and says drinks are free. Once you get in though you wont get served at the bar, only by waiters and they will only bring you drinks if you tip them, everybody wants tipping!

other than that lovely! buses run frequently and are cheap, I swam with dolphins there which was just incredible.

have fun!

I went in august last year, went to cancun and stayed at what was a relatively budget hotel on the lagoon side.

Weather was great, plenty activities going on. The all inclusive club nights where the barfolk want tips are annoying, but I just told one guy I'd tip him at the end of the night and then they are all over you all night trying to give you drinks. I gave them 5/10 dollars if they were around when I was leaving.

Plenty of americans around but thats not a bad thing as the only trouble I saw were from brits doing our country 'proud' as is usual abroad.

If you go don't book the activities with a tour rep as they take the p1ss with prices, book with a vendor in one of the shopping ventres to save at least 50%.

As someone said you arent seeing the real mexico, it's a built up americanised tourist resort but you can take trips out of the resort, I think you need malaria tablets if your leaving the resort, no need within it.

Overall I liked it and would go back apart form the fact there are many other places in the world I want to see!

Cancun is Benidorm for Americans. Avoid! (unless you like Benidorm of course).
Playa del Carmen, a little further south, was a much more laid back place - but that was 8 years ago.

We did a 3 week tour from Mexico City to Playa del Carmen and Tulum via Oaxaca, Sumidero Canyon, Palenque, Chichen-itza and Merida. Travelled by internal plane, bus and self drive beetle cabrio. Unfortunately had to stay a night in Cancun...

Other than Cancun, I liked Mexico very much.

so basically mexico is cool, but cancun isnt...over priced commercial etc. I normally try to hire a car an go expolring for a day here an there, did anyone do this ?

What about the weather at that time of year, do they have a hurricane type season as so many of those kinda places do ?

Are the locals friendly ?

Is cancun really as poor as benidorm, iv been to mallorca quite a bit, an find it a beuatiful place, it has the crappy chav bit (forget what is called, bcm club is there), but then 5 mins away is lovely, you can take a stroll along lovely beaches, there are resturants on beaches, there are couples, familys, lots of well behaved cool people. How might this compare with cancun/mexico?

M8 cancun IS very commercial and is more American than Mexican. Millions love that, so if it's ok with you go for it. I would however suggest Cuba instead - its safer, they can do with your dollars more, and its a PROPER adventure

I don't think cancun is really as bad as benidorm!

I don't know if some of you have had bad experiences or it's not your type of holiday but I liked it.

I didn't hire a car as there wasn't time, there's a trip you can take over to an island (isla mujeres i think) which is still well preserved and not built up etc so you can see what it use to be like.

Hurricane season is september I think, June will be hot, it's the hottest month.

The locals were friendly, the guys at our hotel were fine, never asked for tips etc. In the markets you get pestered by owners to come into every shop, it's not like that in the shopping centres though.

We went on a night out with a guy we met who stayed downtown, he was cool and wasn't taking us for a ride or anything.

As for quiet area's, there are quiet areas of the beach, once you get out past the shopping centres and the main hotels. Theres the island trip as mentioned above and you can take day trips places like chichen itza. Plenty of families, couples too go with the groups of young people too so it's a very mixed group of visitors.

mexico is really good if you include swimming with dolphins and meeting sharks face to face!

Stayed at the Moon Palace, like everone says not all its cracked up to be and full of American *****rs who think because they tip the biggest they should get served before anyone else, going out at night in to the town is a bit dodgy as well, friends of ours got mugged coming out of a club knives and guns the full monty, needless to say won't be going back!

Go to Mauritius the best holiday I've had, best service, friendliest people you could meet brilliant diving and won't cost a fortune if you go all inclusive.

been to mexico 4 times, twice on holiday twice for work.

Cancun is awful, we stayed in a hotel called aventura palace part of the palace chain, but this one is adults only out in the jungle. 5 star and only all inclusive, unlike the moon palace the cheap sister hotel.

The aventura is out in the jungle and away from cancun (thank god). We went on the palace bus which takes you to any other palce hotel to use their features so we went to beach palace for a day. cancun is awful full of american idiots and people flogging crap on the beach.

Moon palace, was full of fat american families with fat american kids on the next bus back to aventura (after breaking in one of their windsurf boards). Yes i snapped the mast and ripped the sail. crappy tourist rubbish they used.

I have enjoyed every trip to mexico people are fantastic food is fantastic just stay away from cancun
