do you speed daily?
just carrying on from the thing on tv yesterday stating only 55% of us admit to speeding?
so lets see how accurate that figure really is?
its a private poll so dont billy bullsh!t pls
to get the ball rolling, id say that I break the speed limit at least 3 times a day, thats being realistic, as I travel on a dual carriage way to and from work, and on one stupid 50, which should be a NSL, long straight road no houses etc etc etc.
I also find that I generally dont speed in 30 zones around houses and kids, unless its the middle of the night ie: am. and then im still just above like 40 ish?

Drive home from gigs at 3, 4 sometimes 5 am.....
99% motorway- and empty ones at that.
So yes, i do. Sometimes by rather a lot.....
Never in town though.
Even in the daytime on a flowing motorway ill normally be doing 80 minimum, sometimes 90- but obviously depending on traffic conditions and weather etc

I do a 60 mile round trip to work on back, through some country roads in Surrey, then M25 & M4 including the roadwork section. As I do shifts, I quite regularly do 80/90 on the motorways and 40 / 45 odd around the back roads. Not unduly fast but keeping up with traffic or setting the benchmark!
% wise of my journey I would say a good 2/3 - 3/4 is at over the speed limit.

a poll like this in this bbs is the same as going to Milf Hunter and asking if they believe in sex before marriage
why have a Suburu if it doesn't a whirl every now and then?

the thing that always made me giggle about the uk speed limit is that it was set all those years ago based on the technology of then, and on the braking ability of the cars then. (cobra?)
the cars of today are far far superior to any car of that era.
its ridiculous, as standards go if it was to be based on the information what they used at the time to set the speed limits, the speed limit today would be in excess of 100 mph on a motorway.

I'd say I speed almost everywhere, but on roads where the limit is 30 or 40 I generally only drive at slightly over the limit, say 45 in the 40.
Motorways its always 85-95, and Im constantly being overtaken.
I reckon virtually all motorists speed, its just that people dont consider 43 in a 40 for example to be speeding. When do you drive along in traffic (unless its a jam) at, or under the limit? VERY rarely - and if you did a trail of cars would build up behind you.
55% may admit to speeding, but clearly its more 95%+ who do.

It's pretty much impossible not to because you spend more time looking at the speedo than the road. If in a 30 and I want to watch the road I just flick the cruise on and sit at 30 but apart from that it's impossible.
Anyone that says they never speed is a liar IMHO. It's just not possible to be under the limit at all times whether you mean to or not.

Thinking aloud here, so suspend disbelief.
Assume suddenly no one anywhere ever exceeded any limit. Would "they" keep lowering limits to try to generate revenue. For no speeding = no money to run the system, give to Gordon. Or the money would have to come out of taxes to keep the thing going!
Would they then lower limits till everywhere was oh, say 30!

I agree with you entirely Vegescoob. I would love for everyone to not speed at all for 6 months and see what happens with regards to funding for certain establishments. I think things would descend into chaos
I'll openly admit I selected the bottom option, which wasn't strictly true, as very occasionally I get speed-creep which means I'll go over by a few mph, but that's normally indicated rather than actual. I find it quite relaxing cruising around within the limits letting everyone else fly by!
I enjoy cornering more than speed, always have, always will.

If we did all drive legally - or perhaps more to the poiint did not get caught then the "safety camera parnerships" would not have the revenue to put up more cameras. They would then probably reduce the speed limits to maintain the revenue flow as you suggest

Why are people surprised that they get taxed for breaking the speed limit? You have to remember that our Governements have a tradition of taxing things that the vast majority of people use daily in the UK. Things such as window tax use to exist and there was a proposal to tax clocks as well quite a few years ago. If the Goverenment can tax you for going to work to earn money to fund it and in the process it can criminilise you and turn you into an enemy of the stae. This effectively removes your voice when it comes to denounceing the draconian measures which they would wish to introduce to be able to track and trace your movements and also eventually your thoughts. The Government is a self serving entity that thinks we should be here for its conveniance and not the other way round.

Why ...
So why do so many people speed.
Economics.
You can fit more work or play into your day by minimising your journey times.
If everyone stuck to the speed limits it would cost the economy £millions (or £billions?) in lost production. This would far outweigh the economic advantage of a few less accidents.
All IMHO of course.
Every time there is a jam the road hauliers announce that it cost millions of pounds. The same would be true if everyone did 70mph and not 85mph on the motorway.

I speed wherever I like, but never in residential areas, near schools, or generally anywhere I don't know well. I've driven with this attitude for the last 6/7 years and have never been caught, have never been in an accident, and haven't killed anyone.
