ID cards dead?
Well not if the government has anything to do with it. A parliamentary committee (might even be crossparty) has found serious problems with the ID card scheme. Time to scrap it completely?

I voted for the tattoo but Id assumed that an ironic point was being made...?
Ffs! A tattoo; this is OUR country, governed on OUR behalf, with OUR mandate, by OUR elected representitives; we arent the slaves of the state (yet) and the notion that we should be forced to carry a biometrically authenticated identity card is disgusting. We would do well to remember this when the new Labour government wants to charge us to drive on our roads and low-jack our cars with satellite tracking equipment. Were you all aware that compulsary fingerprinting is still on the cards for 2008?
Seeing as Im not a criminal I shouldnt object; so Id be happier with a chip implant; no need to carry a card; you can scan me whenever you want. In future this can done at birth when the state takes your new-born childs compulsary DNA sample.....

GC8 - I've read it
Thoughtcrime is interesting - being locked up for what you are thinking of doing (or even thinking of not doing)
Locking someone up without trial in Bellmarsh because of what they might do?
Food for thought!

We should all benefit in the end. Criminals will find it harder to hide under false names etc. It will free the courts up and save money. Police will target the criminal element and get them off the streets – they wont simply stop the little old granny walking her dog.

But if you put on a different jacket and forget your ID card you will be one of the criminal element Then you will be off the streets while your identity is verified.

How can it be a human rights issue ? Britain is one of the only countries in Europe and one of the few countries in the world not to have ID cards, so why is it a human rights issue for the English to have them but fine for the rest of Europe.
I think the Brits (of which I am one) needs to get their heads out of their ***** and realise that they are no more special than everybody else and what is the big deal with carrying an ID card anyway???

Erm, do I eat frogs legs? No. Do I drive a scooter and say 'caio' to my pals? No. Do I take part in huge beer drinking Oktoberfest events? No. Do I drive a Trabant? No.
Just because other countries do things, doesn't mean its OK for us - the € anyone??

Just because you don't indulge in Oktoberfest doesn't mean you are not part of Europe whether you like it or not and anyway you don't know what your missing you should try Oktoberfest once you never know you might actually enjoy it

@Wurzel. Why not start by making it obligatory to carry one's driving licence while driving. That could be enacted immediately, for minimal cost, and give an idea of the problems with compulsory ID cards.
BTW I think you'll find that we are more special than everybody else which is why this scheme is seeing such opposition.
If you lose your card will you be allowed out? How can you get a new card if you're not allowed out? What happens in Germany?

I presume all the countries that have ID cards have much lower crime & terrorist activity than the UK then?
Despite the fact I carry 2 "ID" cards here in Canada (Driving Licence & Health Card), I will never get a UK ID card. I do not trust the UK govt (especially NL) to not abuse the cards after everyone has one.
I would be willing to bet that the criminals & terrorists will carry on their activities unhindered by ID cards and that ordinary people's lives will become inconvenienced through ID cards.
