Red face Council tax to ROCKET!!!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4230427.stm

Apparently council tax bands are to be revised, as they currently work on 1991 house values, but are now going to be re-worked for 2005 house values!!!

Get ready for some BIG rises!!! Labour have been making a killing from inflated house prices, with stamp duty and inheritance tax netting billions already!!

With 1.1trillion pounds of consumer debt in the UK, how much tax hikes/bill increases can people take before it all comes crashing down??!!

What a joke!!! I live in a modest flat which is not expensive in terms of the Edinburgh house market and yet I pay just over £100 as a single occupant for council tax per month. Thats 15th my banked wages which you might not think is a lot but consider mortgage, car running costs, fuels, food, etc, etc.

Pete, it's based on averages, so if your house has gone up in value above the average you will pay more. If it is below the average you pay less.

Nice houses in nice areas are unlikely to be below average are they, ex council flats in high rise blocks will be

Since when has living in a nice street in a nice house in a nice area been cheaper than living in a high rise in a scum ridden drug crazed estate?????

Of course it costs MORE and it SHOULD! whats the problem????????

Relative to what Pete. Relative to people who were old enough to buy a house before the prices went out of control?

The amount of money I pay on a mortgage and council tax now would have bought me the equivalent of a 300k house only 5 years back. House prices continue to rise, yet in most parts of Britain the wages aren't increasing to keep up with them.

Kind of unfair on many people out there, I have no consumer debt but I still have to keep up with extortionate house prices and the second highest council tax rates in the UK and I am far from comfortable. I manage to live in to a decent standard in a decent house, but it leaves me far from flush at the end of every month.

Please explain, using your biblical knowledge of the world and everybody's circumstances how me paying more council tax will stay relevant to me? I bet it increases more than a cost of living rise.

You CAN USE CAPS if you feel you need to get your POINT ACROSS like I know you enjoy doing.

And I was saying that, maybe, one SHOULD pay MORE than one does now ..... so those in poor areas can get the break that your rising house prices have given you!?

Yes that bit is relative, but :

Wages - council tax - mortgage = Massively disproportionate in many areas, hence not relative.

Further increases will only serve to make it less relative to income.

and, DICKSPLASH, that means that it will only serve to push this country as a whole further into debt as more and more people borrow to cover their shortcomings. You are as out of touch as that plonker you so admire.

Really, anyone who did that would be a right plonker surely? Bit like trying to run a country by running up a massive debt

Its still a break - you can tap into the wealth that Labour has allowed you to build up in your property ...... if you CHOOSE not to use it then so be it!

So, with simple economics let's assume that I live in a farm workers cottage in the country that has no mains sewage, no street lighting, no police presence, refuse collection every fortnight and a lane that is used by townies as a shortcut which inevitably has led to it's deterioration - this means that I should pay more for the "priviledge" than a homeowner living in one of the local towns because their house is worth more?

Pete, I will forgive you this, due to your age and the obvious senile dementure symptoms, but if you re-read my posts you will note I have no borrowing currently.

Many people though in a similar position to me may be faced with an awkward decision, borrow more or move out into a crappy house if the rates increase by their predicted amount.

Of course, councils need to raise a certain amount of money and they will do it (quite rightly) by hitting the richest ..................

How many voted in the Local Council Elections then?? Hmmmmmm, thought so! Looks like its your own fault then!!

Ha Ha

So ...... you are ASSUMING that someone else may, or may not, need to move to carry on living?? ............ but then may borrow, or may not - but then again what if they have no bin??

I think you are assuming a little too much, don't you??
