Was the car parked on the street? If so park at the top of the drive or garage it if you are able. Otherwise not really a lot you can do. A work mate of mine used to get this problem frequently, and it resulted in a car fire.

Distributor cap (used to be better to do the rotor arm anyway) - somebody is working in the dark ages!! Most cars have electronic ignition now, so unless it's a 1970's Beetle or something that's a non starter.

Disconnecting the battery will work, but may require the radio, clock etc re-setting. Other than that, can't beat good visual deterents such as a steering lock of some kind, disklok's are good but about £70.

Glue two Swan Vesta match heads under the petrol cap so they strike as it is unscrewed? (Check your car - and house - insurance policy is up to date before doing this).

Seriously, it's a pig as they know where you live, so any hidden razor blades etc will result in something dodgy through your letterbox. Yet, TBH, do you really think they'll be back? Are they that stupid to go to the same place twice?

<thinks>

Yeah, perhaps you're right...

Unfortunately happened in his work car park after he got to work - took out a few other cars with it too, which didnt go down too well.

Maybe it is worth staying up all night to catch the scum? Maybe give them a first hand demonstration of exactly how flammable petrol is

Razor blades attached to the flap works wonders!!

You should have seen the blood when a mate did this once under his door handles

You sure someone doesn't have a grudge against you? A couple of pounds of sugar in the petrol tank will be a lot harder to sort than the silly string

Cant help with the problem, but you may be amused by an old Darwin Awards story where someone tried to syphon petrol from a Winnebago motor home.
The owner found them a bit later lying on the pavement surrounded by sewage from the chemical toilet. He declined the opportunity to press charges saying it was the best laugh he'd had in ages.

Connect a permanent live to the filler cap so that when it's opened it sparks and ignites the tank.

The problem is solved twofold - The car is destroyed so they can't steal fuel from it and secondly the thief is destroyed so they won't be doing any stealing anyway!

"Mi'lord, I had been working on the car all day. At the end of the day I reconnected the battery and in the failing light I connected it the wrong way round."

Death by misadventure, case closed

You know - I am such a vindictive **** that I would hide below the car for a week until one of them walks near it. Kidnap the ballix, tie him up, gag him, put him in the garden shed and take photos every day, telling him you are trying to sell him on www.chavsforsaleforgaysexnoquestionsasked.com. After a week, cut off his fingers and toes and let him go
