Oh. Does HSBC own any of those?

I was under the impression that each bank had their own sort code prefix.

each individual bank has a sort code. so 050442 refers to yorkshire bank in grantham 050443 (next number) might refer to yorkshre bank in boston etc

no idea who HSBC own though

yeah i know that the whole sort code tells you which individual bank it is, but i am assuming that the first two digits tell you which banking group it is, e.g. 20 equals barclays.

i need to pay money (cash) into someone's bank and therefore i need to know what flavour of bank to go into. luckily i now know it's HSBC.

phew.

HSBC and Egg both start with 40 - Have you tried googling the entire sort code?

No they don't. Egg's major owner is Prudential:

In June 2000, Egg plc listed on the London Stock Exchange - Prudential plc is the largest shareholder with 79% of our shares. Egg is the parent company of a number of companies making up the Egg group, all of which trade under the name 'Egg'.

Weren't MBNA thinking about acquiring Egg from Prudential? In any case, as you say Egg isn't owned by HSBC. The correct answer to the initial question turned out to be (from a reply I got on another bbs):

The 40 series contains a raft of foreign banks. Probably ones who used Midland/HSBC for UK clearing
