I did it for a while to get out of another job on a sub contracting basis.I got 60% of the job price which at the time(7.5 years ago so adjust accordingly)was around 60p per mile with minimum of £3.60.A job to London from Sheffield would earn around £100 but I only got £60 and you had to take expenses out of that.If you picked something up to return the rate was 50%.Bear in mind it took you most of the day if it was after 9am,so that pretty much rules out any more longer trips.

I didn't make any money out of it and the moral of the story is-don't sub contract. That would mean getting your own customers though which takes time and there will be times you won't be earning anything at all.

If a driving job appeals to you then you'd probably be better off financially being cards in,in the short term.I don't know how many hours training a week you'd need to do,but bear in mind that driving all day is pretty tiring and you might not feel like going to college/wherever afterwards.

Try picking up an old Luton from an auction and doing 'man and van' work putting ads in the supermarket and local rag.
Someone I know gave up a courier job to do just this and only works half the time for twice the money he was on before. The bonus is that it is all cash work.

If you want to earn out of it, you need to be bloody reliable and look at doing specialist emergency work to Europe etc. A M8 does this, machines to be on site at a specific time to meet installation engineers and that kind of thing. He did one just before Xmas, UK to Austria, next day by noon got over a grand profit for it.

I used to deliver emergency stuff when I worked for a haulage company. It was mainly bearings and parts for production lines that would cost mega bucks per hour if they are un serviceable.

Quite often got sent up to the North Coast of Scotland at 2pm on a Friday. Not the most sociable hours. It wasn't me earning the big money either. £6 per hour ish, and a trip to Scotland would earn the company about £600!

Did Brum to Nottigham, then got back and had to go to Hull the same day. God bless the A38. Not.

Go through an agency or contact the local couriers for a job, less hassle than going it alone, partic if you are training for a new job.
