I thought van helsing was a great film. Sure you don't have to think too deeply about the plot, but it's just good old comic book fun 
Why does something have to have amazing effects to be enjoyable. Some of the best films ever made have had really dodgy effects...

All personal opinion though. I tend to just enjoy films whatever they are, and don't let the quality of the effects spoil it for me. Got over 400 dvds in my collection now, some with great effects, and some with not, but I enjoy them all
