Anybody own a property abroad?
Anybody have a holiday home abroad? If so all feedback welcome,ie advantages, disadvantages etc. Have you made/lost money on it? How easy has it been to maintain? Have you rented it out? etc etc

I have a "villa" in Turkey. I think it cost a fiver before GWII. Probably worth 3 quid now don't rent it out, but a nice local chap cuts the grass once a week and cleans the pool - that costs about £380.00 a year. Pool is shared between 4 villas. If you are looking for investment growth look at the new EU member states

Small house in France, in the Limousin, still being done up.
It was the Mrs' idea, she loves it, I go through moods: sometimes I'm all for it, sometimes not.
I expect I'll feel better about it when NOT every stay is spent working on it, and when the hot water situation and bathroom is NOT just a tiny electric shower in the caravan in one of the barns!
Pros: has been a good investment, buying when we did, (2002) means it's already worth at least 50% more even with no mods.
Nice to be there in holidays, (except for the work).
VERY peaceful compared to the UK, (at least where I live).
Caravan stationed there, saves paying a ferry crossing for it yearly.
The people in that region are lovely.
Cons: it's still costing us plenty to do up, although we are nearly there!
Wife wants to go EVERY holiday, (she's a teacher).............
But she DOESN'T want the drive down France (8 hours) or down England (4hours)
Not the most comfortable place I've stayed, but it's getting better!
Every spare penny we have/get is allocated to "the house".
If/when there are problems, rules to be obeyed, or red tape to overcome, it's all to be sorted in a foreign language............and guess which one of us has the most French?
The region we chose is VERY beautiful, but doesn't have the best climate in France.........I'd have preferred Provence, but too far/too dear at the mo.
We don't let, but once it's "done" will allow family/friends to use it on the understanding that they cut the grass etc.(2000 sq m)
